Greetings,

Your questions require answers that cannot be explained by a simple reply on an Internet Forum.

Go here:

http://swordforum.com

Create an account (it's free), and ask on the beginners forum. Best thing you could do is read all the articles availible on that site first.

Hope thats helps...

First suggestion is to wait more than 20 minutes before expecting an answer.

What kind of metal is best for a sword? I would have to say steel.

Now the best question, is what kind of steel? As Otter said, it's not just a simple answer. It depends on the what the sword is going to be used for, how it will be taken care of, and a myriad of other questions.

If you use the search, you'll find information on this discussion from the past.

My slant on it, is that I NEVER recommend starting with swordsmithing. Start with knives and work you way up. It will be be incredibly frustrating and you won't get the results you want otherwise.

Well a good metal from the junk yard to make a sword from. I would have to say the leafspring off a car or truck. A propane powered plumbers torch is most likely only going to get it hot enough to mess up the temper and nothing more so thats out.
Strike while the iron is hot. Steel is strongest so say we all.
