sword and buckler... with a spike on it.
two questions here really..
I'm becomming more and more intrested in sword and buckler, has anyone used this combination is SCA and what did you make of it? harder, easier, more fun etc?
I'm also interested in how buckler type shields were adapted into weapons with blades or spikes on them.. so theoretically, this wouldnt be a shield with a spike, which I think would be illegal, but it would be a short blade or dagger even with an arm guard attached to it.
Would I get away with that? I know some places probably wont take that..
Wyrm.
going to look up rules to see whats what...

I use a sword and 50 cm roundsheild that most folks call a buckler. I think it's a little big for the name.
A buckler with a spike would be considered an "offensive sheild" which is forbidden. I would like to experiment with a spiked buckler, but it would have to happen outside on SCA context.
As a completely unrelated aside, I once saw a sheild banned from the field because it was "offensive", but for an odd reason. The sheild had a painting (sort of) of a nude female human on it. The marshals said "you know, that sheild is offensive, take it off my field". I thought that was a kind of neat word play. The sheild owner put a cover on the sheild, and was still able to fight with his equipment. I think that he was amused with the word play too.
good luck

Act Your Rage
not in the SCA and therefore dont have any comments on that bit but I thought I'd post a few links to pics of the above mentioned bucklers...

A friend of mine named Sir Dagonet d'Marlowe does quite well with a tiny, wee, buckler no bigger than a salad bowl. I saw him whoop some boo-tay at the last Tourney of Ymir, which is a very hot tourney here in Atlantia. He's on the AA as 'Dagonet' (go figger). Drop him a private message, he's good about responding.

Wyrmspleen, check out Talhoffer's sword and buckler section. He shows spiky leaf shields!

They are not banned by SCA rules... maybe by Kingdom. I fought with one for a while... hated it.
Marshalls Handbook- Section IV- D.- Deliberately striking an opponent’s head, limbs, or body with a shield is forbidden, unless that shield is designed for use as a weapon, and is approved by the Kingdom Marshallates
Hello,
I fight with a 15" buckler.
It is a very fun style. Study reposts and moving around the oponent. It takes some practice before you're radar gets turned on. The bread an dbutter shot is when they shoot for you're leg (wich happens aot). Learn to wait for the leg shot then slide you're leg back and drop the buckler to make the block. moving you're leg will tend to make the opponent over extend thier sword arm. Aim for thier shoulder at the ball joint.
Thanks,
Brennainn

You've kind of hit the nail on the head with the "Dagger with a big handguard" idea. The trick is convincing your marshallate of this. The big complaints against this are 1)in the case of an arm strapped bucker, you have a weapon strapped to your arm, not held in your hand, or 2) in the case of a center-grip bucker you have a punch dagger or "katar" with the blade inline with your forearm, which is also soft banned in many places for no real reason.
Here we see the trouble the ambiguity of SCA weapon and armor standards causes. Until the rules are scrapped and re-written, you just have to compromise and negotiate with everyone from kingdom marshals to your opponents.
