Aethelmarc spear question

Post by Ewan »

Hi all,

A question has been asked on one of our local lists about the maximum spear length in Aethelmarc (sp?). Is it 9' or 12'? If you could answer this for with a quote from the marshalls handbook, I would greatly appreciate it.

12' spears are starting to disappear, since they are banned at Pennsic. The Eastern half of the nation (cut the USA down the middle) likes to train under Pennsic conditions. I saw no 12' spears at Blackstone Raids.

We experimented with 12' spears again for a very, very short time about five or six years ago. They were really effective but Vitus is right, we can't fight with them at pennsic, so what was the point. They were also a bit harder to control and fight well with. I was lucky enough to be selling spear shafts at the time so it was a boon to me...

From the Earl Marshal's Policies of Aethelmearc:

http://www.aethelmearc.org/downloads/la ... licies.pdf

4. Spears
a. Total spear length shall not exceed 12 feet.
b. Spears do not have any cutting/smashing heads or butt spikes.
c. Thrusting tips on all spears must be not less than 3 inches in diameter. They must be
constructed so as to provide progressively resistant give and prevent the end of the weapon from coming in
contact with the opponent.

They're legal.. but also very uncommon.

I was at Blackstone a few years ago and Count Andrew was running me down- I had a 12 foot spear and I was able to actually nail him before he ran inside my tip. We both laughed, because it seemed impossible.
