Greetings
The book "The knight and the blast furnace" by Williams has been recommended to me as a good book about armour.
Does anybody have this or seen it? and if so what do you think about it?
thanks
Jeff

It is a good research book, however it is quit expensive ( $279) It has a lot of photographs of pieces that don't show up other armour books. If you are interested in the metalurgical data on armour this will be invaluable. It is a serious treatis on the subject.
With that stated the overall production quality in not that that great, the photos are all black and white, generally there is only one smallish photo of each piece and the general page layout is amateurish. It's definitely an armour geek book.
Here's a link to it on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... ce&s=books
Try to take a look at it before buying.

Aaron is right. In each of his characterizations.
When I saw it, I went out and bought it. I have not regretted it in the least. It is really nice to have metalurgical analyses of a whole bunch of armour all in one place. It allows you to track the use of hardening (in good armours) through time and country. It also shows you how badly they did at matching up the steel in a particular harness.
It is a bit pricey, but most of the armour books I have to deal with are also. There might be someone near you with a copy you could look at - Tom has looked at mine pretty extensively.
Wade (spends too much on armour and books) Allen
