As if sword and buckler wasn't difficult to deal with enough, James finally resorted to his favourite weapon combo back to the SCA days: Sword and shield. I challenged him with my trusty bastard sword and the result is I get my xxx handed to me on a plate. HA HA HA
There are also sword and buckler vs sword and shield, 1 polearms user vs 2 sword wielders, and 2 vs 2, etc. I also gave Ben's german bastard sword a try and the result was that my opponent had to pick up a shield after I've won the first 3 rounds in a row. Then I got killed again and again. Gosh.
Well, since the shield rarely didn't take more than 5 hits in each bout, I dun think one can destroy a shield with so few hits in reality... Woods are not easy to cut with swords.
If he stays in the typical left leg leading stance, next time try Das Greyssen, or "The Spring". Cut downward from Vom Tag like a Zornhau, but as you cut, let your right hand come off the hilt. This gives you a couple of extra inches of range instantly. Aim for the lower leg between the knee and the foot. If you miss, let the sword continue it's arc and return to vom Tag. Usually though, you'll cut the sword and shield fighter in the ankle before he knows what's happening. Stretch out and use all the range you can. Also watch for the lead leg to move, an experienced fighter will tend to pass the lead leg back and cut you in the head or arm if he sees a low strike coming. You have to make it look like a zornhau to a high target, only letting it drop and "spring" to the leg at the last instant. Even good fighters will often be caught by this trick (at least once). Also, keep a tight grip on the pommel with your left hand, it's really embarassing to lose your sword as it hits his leg .
Thanks Matt! In fact the spring has been my dominate victory blows when fighting James when he was with sword and buckler but with the bigger shield, he was capable of deflecting my blow with the rim of the shield and my sword skidded off to the ground.
I think yeah, as you said, I should make it more like a zornhau or something from above before going low. What I think is he has somehow gotten used to my "tricks" and are not easy to deceive anymore.

Oh yeah... nothing like your sparring buddies to help you work beyond your "tricks" eh?
OACSN, Chan, have you given any though to any other media format beyond Real Media? I have been wanting to watch and comment on your videos, but I got disenchanted with Real a couple of years back...
Sorry for the slight hijack but for those of you that need a player for .rm .ram etc Do a search for a program called Real alternative . It plays real files without the bloat of the real player etc .
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting, "...holy shit...what a ride!"
