Leather helms

Post by Benalishlancer »

I was just browsing the web and found a site mentioning English archers in the 15th century sometimes wearing leather helms. Is there any kind of support for this? If so, where can I find some examples (in art or anything) or what type would they have been?

I cant recall any period sources at the moment that support this. Did the site give any sources? It might be worth to email them and ask. Also I do know Albion Armorers makes a leather helm. Most of their stuff is really well researched so you might want to ask them where they got their info to make this. Here it is:

There was reconstruction of a cuir boilli archer's sallet in the 1997 Royal Armouries Yearbook. There was some documentation presented. The sallet was two layers of veg skirting IIRC. I think it would have been pretty solid.

The same edition contains Jeff Singeman's (Forgeng) first published article on the MS I.33 treatise as well. It is well worth the cover price.

Hey Kyle,

There is a source regarding Henry V expedition to France, and the battle of Agincourt that mentions 'caps' of leather and wicker being worn by the archers - I don't have it to hand, but I will wager Brent can find it in a short time.
