Looking for Pewter Casting Supplies

Post by newfghtr »

Am looking more specifically for Petro-Bond(green sand) in smaller quantity. If I recall 25lbs. is the smallest bag they sell on thier website.
and thats far to much for an apartment dweller like me.
Also for a good tutorial in carving SoapStone.
This will be pretty new to me so any and all good advice is welcome !!

Thanks !! :D

Aethelwulf,

Give me a call during the day at the shop or drop me an e-mail there at work and I'll give you my contact info for the sand.

Do you have all the stuff you need for the soap stone carving? If not check out By My Hand Designs. They sell everything you need to start casting in soap stone in a handy kit. I think the only thing missing is your kitchen stove to melt the pewter.

I don't know of a source for "how to" carve and cast in soap stone, but there's got to be some one on here who does.

Here's my unfinished write up- The text is there (look for the .doc file) and all the pics referred to in the text, but I haven't yet built a web page out of them. It was originally for a magazine article.

Hope that helps a little. Feel free to ask specific questions, those we can answer. :-)

By my Hand is a great place to start for materials, but I would suggest getting a Hot Pot for melting if you're going to do a lot of it. The ladle method works okay for some, but others find it cumbersome. If you have the funds, a Lee Production Pot IV is really nice for this work. I got mine at Gander Mountain for $50, but you can find them online too.

Happy casting,

Instead of petro-bond, I'm using a casting sand that I get from fdjtool.com or fdjtools.com. It is finer than petro bond and it is cheaper than delft clay. They sell a kit with a mold frame, parting compound and sand for about $60 to $70 The sand is about $15 for 5 pounds about a gallon worth.
Carving soap stone is easy, there should be an artical on stephen's florualgium (sp). Basicly slab the stone and get it flat. Carve your design into it using files, dremel bits, nails etc.... check design with modeling clay. Remember that you are working in the reverse.
I'm doing a casting class at my place this weekend if you want to come by, if you are in town.
If you have any questions email me your phone number and I will call you with answers. Also your old knight would be a good source for this info.
Hope all is well
