wool fabric for tunics?

Post by Willing Pell »

Hello, I'm looking for white and madder red wool fabric suitable for early tunics, does anyone have a favorite source. Any idea how much per yard this will set me back?
The artisan formerly known as Willing Pell, then Juan Santell and then Willing Pell again. Hey, Prince could do it, why not me?

One of my favorite sources for wool these days is Fabric.com; they're currently running a special that has wool melton running to $6.61 per 36" yard (they sell it by 39" "yards," you see). Sadly, no white or madder red there.

Fashion Fabrics Club has a few different shades of red wool coating available (I'm not sure precisely which tone of "madder red" you're looking for, but I think Berry Red might be the closest) for $11/yard. Looks like they have a few ivory tones in worsted wool gabardine too.

Being as how you're in New York, you also (unless my geography is completely skewed, and you're on the opposite side of the state or something) could check out the garment district in New York; Fabric Shopping in New York City's Garment District, or this map, might be useful, or you could get in touch with the folks in Ostgardr and see what they recommend.

I've seen some nice wool fabric at http://www.a1fabric.com/catalog.php?cat=2 lately, but I don't see your madder red today. I'm glad you asked though, because I saw some things I wanted when I checked. :o

Wool and linen...good stuff. And silk...I didn't buy any green silk
yet but I'm sure I will.

It's likely to take a phone call or two to find the better wools.

http://burnleyandtrowbridge.com/ , you'll have to order a package of swatches, their fabrics aren't online yet (new website, old company)

http://www.periodfabric.com/ may have something suitable, they're generally pretty affordable

http://www.classactfabrics.com/ , Linda Learn is very reenactor-friendly, looks like she's loading up for Pennsic right now

http://www.carolinacalicoes.com/ you'll have to call and ask, they have waaaay more fabric than the website lists

96 District Storehouse, 111 Trinity St., Abbeville SC 29620 (formerly 96 Fabrics) has an amazing collection, sorry I don't have the number there at the new store.

If you need real madder and other naturally dyed yarns to weave belts, etc., drop an email to Susan Wallace at yarns@bellsouth.net , please tell her I sent you.

If you need some heavy wool cloth, you might find something at http://www.creating.myknet.org/prices2.htm , those are pretty good prices for the weights of wool they carry. Email them, their in-stock varies. Nice folks.

If you find any real linsey-woolsey, please email me. There's supposed to be a new mill making it again, but I haven't been able to find it.
