I'm really interested to hear how SCA, Inc became involved in this issue in the first place. I doubt someone in Milpitas suddenly felt a disturbance in the force and initiated a comprehensive investigation to root out this undotted "i". SOMEONE had to come forward with a complaint about Sir Tomiki(Sp? everyone seems to spell it different) after he had already won. Call me cynical, but I have a hard time believing this rules-mongering was completely innocent and impartial (if there is such a thing as "innocent" rules-mongering)

Seems pretty clear that SOMEONE in the Outlands didn't want Tomiki on the throne. Gives the phrase "fighting Sword and Board" a whole new meaning. The BoD has proven itself to be a very effective weapon for those who know how to wield it.

I wonder if the SoSen entertained Duke Tomiki's side of the story before making his ruling.

It also makes me wonder how much I can rely on my own fighter authorization card. Was it issued to me properly by the An Tir marshallate? On the other hand, I suppose I don't have much to worry about. Best I've ever gone in an An Tir Crown is four rounds, so I doubt if anybody cares whether my authorization card was issued properly or not. My husband's card---that's another matter entirely.

One thing seems pretty clear, however. No marshals were harmed in the making of this pathetic, is-this-club-even-about-medieval-recreation-anymore mess.

Sorry Haroun, in case you're reading this forum. Didn't mean to come down on you when you'd already apologized and you clearly you feel bad about the whole situation. Thanks for shedding light on the situation.

It just seems to me that when the marshallate makes errors, it's usually the fighters that suffer, get censored in some fashion, etc. I've seen fighters have their cards pulled for field violations; I have yet to see a marshal's warrant pulled for things like enforcing nonexistent rules, etc. Maybe that's because I'm from An Tir and our marshals are pretty low key. Active marshalling is about as popular as small pox up here.

I have to say, though, I still don't see the necessity of invalidating the tournament. Both the King and SoSen have some discretionary powers, as does the Board. Can't any of these people "temper justice with mercy"?

I've been tracking this as well. The only thing I know for sure is, I don't know the whole story.

The Chiv from the Outlands have been oddly silent, but given the info we have now, it sure looks to me like the Crown would have been within thier rights to use discretion here.

Someone went directly up to the BoD. I can't figure out if it was malicious or just bureaucracy run amok. I also can't figure out if the Crown got an end run around Them or whether the Crown itself went to the BoD (which would mean They are part of the group that wants the Tourney invalidated-I'm not saying that's the case, but it is among the possibilities given the scant info we have)

I believe that one of the current Corporate muckity-mucks is from Outlands, although I can't remember who at the moment.

So, anyone who has first hand knowledge know WHO specifically went to the corporation?

Like I said, I still don't know all the facts, but the whole situation gives the impression of bureaucracy getting in the way of actually running an SCA Kingdom.

I believe that one of the current Corporate muckity-mucks is from Outlands, although I can't remember who at the moment.

The current corporate muckity-muck from Outlands is the President of the SCA herself, Meg Baron. I think her SCA name is Mistress Francesca di Pavia? She used to be our Board Chairman, then, like many directors, moved on to yet another corporate position.

Technically as president, Ms. Baron wouldn't have voted on the Tomiki issue, although I'm sure the president can voice input to and/or influence the Board whenever he or she feels like it.

There may be sitting directors from the Outlands right now, but I'm not sure. I've kinda lost track. But as noted previously, the King of the Outlands has held at least one term of office as a BoD member. I've read Haroun's statement again, and Haroun doesn't make it clear who decided to contact the SoSen or Board about the matter. But based on HM's previous tenure as a director, I suspect it was King Giovanni himself who contacted the BoD/SoSen. If so, that's kinda too bad.

I'm in agreement with Aveloc Exherederim, with whom I've gossiped about the Tomiki matter. Aveloc points out that by His Majesty Giovanni abnegating his authority as king to rule on the errors of his subordinates, the marshals who improperly issued the authorization card, HM Giovanni has created a situation where poor Duke Tomiki has no one to appeal to. Remember, according to Corpora, the Board is an appellate body only. Sadly, the Board frequently ignores that section of the corporation's governing documents, and in this case, they jumped right in and made a ruling rather than requesting that a decision properly be made at the kingdom level first.

Kinda makes me wonder why they're going to bother to refight the Outland Crown tournament. If Kings aren't going to administrate at the kingdom level, why not just have the Board select who the next king will be? Or do away with the figurehead guy totally, and just have the Board run the Laurel kingdoms.

Oh, well. Better rein in this particular rant. Nice chatting with you Sir Daniel!

Yeah......I haven't been playing much SCA lately. I tend to have way more fun at EMP events. But a good friend of mine will be king of An Tir at Estrella, so I'm planning on being there, with my pretty red axe. Perhaps I'll see you there?

By the way, other things that get my attention include:

1. An unending string of compliments (directed at me)
2. Poetry (about me)
3. Gifts of armour (that fit me)

You're eloquent string of compliments is all too kind and replaces the pain of your absence from the ether with unbearable embarassment. It's a worthy price to see your shining virtual face once again.

Unfortunately, shcool will not allow mw to make Estrella this year and I would not dream to ask you to grace us with your presence at Gulf Wars. On the other hand, Baldar and I have plans for Pennsic and it's only nominally an SCA event anyway so prehaps we might see you there. We will also likely return to Ragnaroc next year as well. After next summer, we hope to do more travelling and the Pacific Northwest is definitely on the itinerary (family, plus friends, plus beatiful countryside...)
