Title Companies?

Post by Lucian Ro »

Has anyone dealt with vehicle title companies, online or otherwise?

I have a friend that wants to sell me a non-running 1994 Ford Ranger, but he cannot find the title, or, well, the one he seems to have out of Tennessee looks like a bill of sales, not the titles that I'm used to looking at here in Florida. It's all on the up and up, problem is is that he leaves for Georgia tomorrow and can't afford to trailer it, so I'm wondering that instead of possibly running into problems at the tag office if I should just use a title company instead?

Has he tried his state's department of motor vehicles? He could get a duplicate title from there for a fee (at least you can in PA). Or is there a AAA near you? They (again here in PA) can get a duplicate title for a fee (in addition to what the state charges). Just a thought.

I agree, AAA or DMV. Why dick around with someone who is going to just do what they are going to do and charge you on top of it. In Kaleeforneeya, I had to register a scooter without a title, they basically wrote down the Serial number and the engine number and verified that it wasn't stolen. With a car they run the VIN. As long as you have a bill of sale and the car isn't hot, that is all that matters.
I refuse to yield to the concept that one should learn how to be a good victim.

I know you can get a duplicate title for like $7 or something if I remeber correctly. Diffrent states do or atleast did diffrent things with issuing titles though. All the states I have lived in always sent new title to me after it was changed. Except New Mexico which just printed new one up when I changed the title from Ohio to New Mexico. One warning for you though, last time I went to do a title transfer in Florida they wouldnt do it unless the vehicle had insurance on it. Did not matter if it was in running condition ect or not, they would not transfer title till I put insurance on it.
Which normally wouldnt be big deal since I already had all the paperwork done. But I was scared of losing orginal title that was signed over to me before I got the car running.

In WA, it's $35 to file for lost title. $54 in Oregon, last I checked. Not sure what it runs here in NV.

Basically, it varies by state, but you need to request it from the state it's registered in.

I just filed for lost title in IL- cost was $65.00

The fee in IL is $65.00 (same fee as getting the title in your name in the first place).

I sold a truck and could not find the title, had to give the guy his $$ back and apply for the title. They had paperwork at the dmv where I could sign over all interest in the vehicle (power of attorney for that vehicle) to the would be buyer but it just seemed like a hassle.

Guy said he would come back in two weeks once I had the title to buy the truck... We'll see. Title came in on Tuesday.

Anyone in IL want an '89 F250 4X4? LOL
