He was a kind man, and a Duke of great renown.

I met him briefly; he will be missed.
Hark the moaning gulls around him,
Hark their shuddering calls of terror
At his fearful fighting pæan.

I can't believe he's gone. He was doing so well, just to have something different come out and strike him down.

I still remember the first time that I met him and her Grace. They were both so kind to me. I don't think there are many people who would be very thrilled with a 15/16 year old hanging out with them at Pennsic. Instead they both made me very very welcome and his Grace spent most of a day teaching me how to play Catherdral, Pente and Chess.

Of course I spent the rest of the week coming back and bothering all of the oldcastles, since I wanted to play them every day. I swear they must have worked out a schedule of who was spending a coupel of hours playing these games with me. I tend to be stubborn and persistent.. especially with things that I enjoy. :)

His Grace showed me more things to enjoy in the SCA. I also learned thru him that court can be entertaining and fun.. rather than boring.

I remember how he was always nice to me.. thru all of the years I was fortunate enough to know him. I will miss him greatly. I just wish I could do something for her Grace or their son Michael, since I know this must be very hard on both of them.

I remember how much pride and love he had for his household.. and thru them and his family.. he does live on.. I'm trying to keep that in mind, for a small measure of comfort right now.

I did not know him, but he was obviously well regarded. Of course, I have heard of his combat system.

I will remember his family in prayer.

He was one of the first members of the chivalry I met when I joined the SCA in the 70's
He was a remakable man for his courtesy, love of life, and martial abilities
The world is a lesser place without him in it

Let me also add this thought. The expenses for this funeral are going to be high, especially in light of the tremendous hospital expenses they incurred for Gyrth's surgery.

If you can and if you are so inclined please consider a donation to Carol and Michael. They would never ask anyone for the help nor would they solicit any help, but I know they sure could use it.

Master Fritz Justus Fritz is going to be opening up an account for direct donations. If you have any qustions please contact me directly:

I never met the man. And few stories have I heard of him. But the respect I have heard for him from those men and women whom I know and respect tells me without fail that I will be sorry never to have met him. I shall pray for him and his family.

Forwarded from the Oldcastle list:

Dearest Friends,
2 years ago Gyrth and Mel allowed for the creation of a website
dedicated to the clan, by Syr Malcolm. As we all live primarily in
the "now", and the instant email age, it has not seen much use. The
Yahoo Group we are using here has become the very best way for us as
a family to communicate.

About a month ago, Gyrth gave the go ahead to begin reissuing his
Fighting Manual with a new introduction as a fund raiser. We decided
that the website would be a perfect platform for distribution, and
have been working toward that goal. More on this will be forthcoming
later in the week.

With so many people looking for a forum to share their feelings
about Gyrth, Malcolm has yet again modified the site with a public
Guest Book/ Memorial that is available to ANYONE who would like to
post there. It is located at

www.clanoldcastle.com

The intent is to create a single place where everyone can pass on
there stories and their messages and then have a record so Mel and
Michael can look at them later. Please visit the site and leave a
message. The intention will be to collect these and print them out
later for the family, who do not have the time to surf and view
right now. We are very lucky to have this forum ( yahoo), but having
one that is public access allows us to hear from our other friends
as well.

Please distribute this to others as you see fit.

Thanks!

As Shameless has posted.. there is now a guestbook/memorial available on the Oldcastle site:

www.clanoldcastle.com

I ask if you have a story or a message for the Oldcastle clan/family and/or for her Grace and their son Michael, please post it there. If you've already posted something on this forum/message board or another, please consider posting it on the Old Castle site as well, so the family will be able to go and read it, when they can.

I know His Grace Gyrth touched a lot of lives in many different kingdoms, so please pass the word on to other email lists and SCA forums that you may be on, so that all will know that they are welcome to share their thoughts and memories on the Old Castle site. I'm certain knowing and reading how many lives his Grace touched will bring some comfort in the coming weeks.

Thanks,

Tessa
