I have a friend who picked a picture off the GAA site and loves the hat, but unfortunately it is too rich for her blood at that price.

Who is making SCA barred kettles currently?
Ben Scheiner at Dragon Forge and White Mountain Armoury are the only two that I would go to with an order like that.
I owned a White Mountain kettle made of mild steel that was *beautiful* (like H37 on his website). The only negative is the same with all mild steel helms - the brim gouged easily as it's just begging to get hit with a stainless steel basket.
Dragon Forge makes stainless almond chapel-style kettles that are beautiful too. Since the brim is 13 gauge stainless it's going to hold up better in melee. If you want stainless I suggest Dragon Forge or asking WMA to make you one custom.
White Mountain's site says they're not accepting commissions but if you have cash-in-hand you might be able to influence that a little.

Tell your friend to just save up, it'll be worth it.

I have to second WMA. Adam built me a kettle just in time for Pennsic. Mine is the one on his site with the removable grill. Not only is the helm wonderful and a great value, dealing with Adam is painless. He is a very good businessman as well as an outstanding armorer. You can't go wrong there.
