New Mace

Post by olaf haraldson »

Just made a new mace for SCA COmbat. Foam head, stained handle, sinew wrapped handle. I won't actually use it, but I love to make these.

I've viewed them with Explorer and Netscape with no problem. I'm not sure why they're not working.

T-Bob, do you have pics of yours?
I want to make more, this was fun... I need more ideas on shape and finishing though.

Guess these will be made for gifts or to sell. Not at all useful to me, but I can't wait to fight against them! :D

I haven't made a mass weapon before, and I do like these. My query "What are the heads made of?"

I see one looks to be glued together foam of some variety. Would the same construction principle be used to make a poll-axe, or a hand axe?

Yep. I used kayak foam, Cap'n Jime uses something denser... just check your local mass weapon rules.

Robert do you have problems keeping the stugs in the handle of your mace in? I used a similar technique on a greatsword recently and the damn upolstery tacks kept popping out.

Any suggestions?

You have to be very careful that you nail the upholstery tacks in perfectly straight. Failure to do so will result in the tacks popping off.

Ya know, I love my mace. It's a by my hand head like T Bobs. in fact I had stopped in his shop at Pennsic to compliment him on the mace and to tell him how it had already knocked out two people in the fighting thus far that week. Odd, he looked somewhat appalled...
I love the mace though. I use it in melees and line fights. It DEFinitely gets the point across :)

T-Bob - what makes your mace so shiny? Is that muffler tape or something, or just the way the flash hits it ?

Now c'mon, Animal...you're not supposed to break your toys! :P

I haven't tried out the maces currently being made by Mandrake yet, but I do know the By My Hand mace heads have a certain....authority when they strike.

No, it's a style of duct tape that has a more "chromed" look to it. I use it on all my rattan weapons. The weapons look a lot cooler when taped with that type of duct tape, though.

I've only seen it on sale once, at Big Lots, and bought all I could find.

Metallic silver towards the bottom. Problem is, I don't know if it's actually metallic... meaning has metal in it.

I had some that I found at a supermarket once... bought all they had, and haven't seen it again.

I recently purchased a Mandrake mace head, it look really good but i am a little worried about it not hitting hard enough, i think in actual fact the head is really for show and you are more or less hitting through the head with the stick.

Have to wait and see after i mount it and have a play.

Thye hit with some authority, the only problem is, many people are so programmed for that rattan on steel helmet sound they don't take it. On my axes, I used rattan over the foam... I couldn't make it work right on this mace though.

T-Bob & Olaf: What is the total length of your maces? I just built one, and I'm thinking it's a little short.

My Mandrake head split the first time I used it. :-( But that was because I made the rattan too big and it stretched the hole.

We fought with a matched set of maces, one with a Mandrake and one with a By my Hand, and they both hit hard. Wierd (like a Mace feels), but hard.

My other Mace, The Wrath of Kong, is another story all together....
