Krag's essay is great. I just made some elbows and knees. My pattern was very similar to Krag's (his look much, much better though).

Once again, I will say, these elbows/knees rock!! They point to gambesons and cuisses easily, protect well, and his essay make them easy to make. I still owe Krag a brew -- before he put them up on site he snail mailed me patterns and instructions for these knees. I often get complements on the "period-ness" of my kit, and those knees have been with me since the(almost) beginning - thanks to him, I didn't have to use the hidden plastic crap but for a few weeks.

What period style would these knees cover? Early 13th...? Late 13th-14thish?

thorvold, I'm going for about 1350, but that is probably the latest I could use them though.

Rewatched "Quest for the Holy Grail" last night and noticed that Arthur and the other knights were wearing elbows and knees done in this style. Image

I am shooting for "around" 1200-1225. Would this be a good timeframe for these? I just need something that protects the side of the knee as well as the front. I will employ cuisses, and I guess point these to them.

Is that about right?

Sitting here thinking...a set of these made from 20 ga 4130 steel and heat treated properly would make for some light and strong armour! I have some 18 ga 1095, I might just have to make a pair from. Thin enough to do a little repousse work on maybe!?

I'll quit thinking out loud now. Did I mention I saw a dead horse with rigormortis set in yesterday Image. Had to be one of the most funny things I have ever seen. Sorry, the Monty Python comment got me thinking of odd stuff!
