Helm Review: Paul Chen helm from Grendel's Cave

Post by LordWulf »

Trying to get two new fighters to the field as quickly and as safely as possible we needed to find some low cost and decent looking helms. To those ends we hit up evilbay and found Grendel's Cave offering these helmets up for around $100..... so both of them ordered em on Wednsday night and they were both delivered on Friday morning. I mediated the deals for these guys and the communication was excellent.

The helms are nice, the only problem I have found with them is the way that the bottom bells out and can create a gapping problem that makes it hard for someone with a tall neck to cover.

The whole thing is 14g steel, nicely welded and ground lines, the bargrills are nice and clean and both the guys are happy with their newbie helms.

I really hated getting the helms this way but I am pleased with the result and so are the guys so I guess it worked out. Here's the pics of the helm from Grendel's Cave:

Hey I'm not a fighter, in the SCA anyway  But I have seen these on e-bay before and thought they might be good helms to post about here but was afraid to  . I LIKE EM

The only off-the-shelf stuff I'll buy has to be from Windlass, Deepeeka, or CAS Hanwei... Those helmets are pretty, and I was figuring that if our heads weren't so small, my friend Justin and I would purchase one of them each to start out our SCA career in a few months!

I've also dealt with Grendel's cave a few times, having got my Hanwei Practical Katana Plus from them, most notably. Their shipping is fast, and they make smooth transactions and their quality control seems to rival that of big vendors like By-the-sword! A very impressive Ebay Store..!

I am one of those that ordered the helm. The tall necked one Wulf mentioned.I am very happy with this helm so far. as far as the gap at the neck is concerned I beleive we got that worked out but am still considering making say a 16g avantail to go around the sides and back. I'll call it my first maile project.

I will say this about the seller though. He knew we were wanting these helms for an event this weekend that I planned on tryin to authorize at.He seen to it I had the helm friday about 2pm without any extra shipping charges. My hats off to him for working with us on that.

All in all Im really satisfied with this helm.

I've never bought armour from them, but I have purchased several swords from Grendel's Cave, and have been very happy with their service.
