12th - 13th cent. Russian Clothing ??????

Post by Titus Valerius Romanus »

Greetings good gentles,

my lady and I are in a small bind. We are trying to get some proper documentation (text and pictures) of russian clothing from the 12th to 13th centuries for a kingdom A&S project and are having a huge problem finding anything that we can use. We had gone to one site that a bunch kept on linking back to but the books used in their documentation cannot be found.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Mongols dominate Russia (or what is now Russia) in the 12th and 13th centuries. Sorry to complicate things.

Tiredly,

Mord.

Alas yes the Mongols did invade...1236 they occupied most of the Russian Steppes. That being said the only clothing that they directly influenced were trousers and coats.
There were still areas of Rus that were not directly affected by the invasion other than ties to Byzantium were cut.
Ahhhh, those complicated Rus

Thank you for your help

You might try looking at books of Mediaeval Russian art, particularly the ikons. There's also the Raziwill copy of the "Russian Primary Chronicle" (though that was prepared some centuries too late for you).

I've done a bit of research on this have a look at http://www.angelfire.com/empire/egfroth/rus.html - and the links might be of use as well.

Also, maybe try getting in touch with Peter Beatson at Birka Traders, who might be able to help.

Though we haven't heard from him in a couple of years, Norman at Silk Road Armoury has still got a pretty comprehensive website. Much of the Khazars, but I am sure there is Rus stuff in there as well.

here is a start link, but I recall his site is intense.

thank you all for your help. I think we have enough information now (our other contact has updated their book list with the proper info also). This will give us a good lead on things.
