I adore the goddamn SCA.
I was looking over Jengien's website tonight, and as I looked at the pics I realised that I didn't know a single soul in any of those photos- and yet I *DO* know those guys. I love the SCA. I love seeing guys in bad armour who are totally living the impossible!
I look at these guys and the spirit of what they are trying to do and it makes me not give a good god damn about how authentic they are. That will come later.
All I know is that every weekend there are thousands of people trying to perform gallant deeds of arms. They don't spare their wretched bodies! I wish we could all get together in one place, be assigned sides randomly and just go at it all day! It takes a special kind of nut to try to crawl into Froissart's lap and f**cking SEEK HONOR. You are all goddamn crazy and I adore every one of you. The real world has it's head unreachably up it's backside. I raise this bottle of stout to you.
Lay on!

From one nut to another- thanks man. I've said it before, we are all brothers, regardless of the playground on which we romp.

One of the best nights I have ever had in the SCA was at Pensic, when I recieved a dinner invitation from a young fighter I met during the set up for the field melee.
I arrived at their camp in skin out 12th century, and looked at an encampment of cheap two man tents, scattered armor, a hibachi, a styrofoam cooler full of bear wizz bear, and sausages, and about 6-10 guys in t tunics and sweatpants who meant everything to each other.
I have never been guested so well in all the years in this group. these guys were there for the sheer love of this, they were interested in learning anything anyone had to teach them, they were friendly and outgoing.
All I could think of was "I know this place, I was a boy here", I think it was a sad realisation for me that I haven't had the absolute joy these guys were experiancing in attending an event in many years, very much my loss

Vitus set me up with-

Then Mordreth got me with-

I think that this is very important point. Most people here are very concerned with bringing a high level of authenticity to what we do. Yet it is the enthusiasm for "the dream"/"our game" and the comradery that these gentles showed which reminds me of why I started to do this.
Why is it that I forgot? Why do we look on these people and find a longing stirred within us?

All the best,

We love you too Vitus.
This thread made me cry...
The comrade-in-arms atmosphere is one of the things that I love best. Fighting hard and fiercely, then trading hugs and compliments with the same fighters you just traded blows with... yeah, thats living.
I actually got on the Archive today to post that I just became my Shire Castellan... I'm the one responsible for helping newcomers find this expirience.

Anybody else want to negotiate?
