war hat, pot helm...whatever

Post by patric »

this is a war hat that i made out of a civil defence helmet from the cold war era. all i did was dish it out a bit more in the top and strip the lead paint and repaint it with this awesome red and black checker pattern. after that i made sure that it looked good and acutate (dents and scatches) with a nice dull sword. just looking for some opinions and some feed back.

Pictures need to be on the internet already, if you want to use the [IMG] box for them.

If not, you have to go to the bottom of the posting section, click on "Add an Attachment", and then browse your picture files for the proper image, and place it's URL in there, from your PC.

For example, the type of URL you need for the [IMG] tags would look rather like this:

http://bronze-warrior.com/images/bw101.jpg

And in there own right, should make perfectly functional URL's to the image, whether they've been tagged or not.

On the other hand, images from your own computer won't show up unless if you add them as an attachment, and are more likely to look like this...

C:\Documents and Settings\Liebau\My Documents\My Pictures\Iron Age Arms & Armor\Greek Arms & Armor Antiquities\Late attic helmet.jpg

Heh, looks great, sir! Very neat to see stuff made from old war helmets. I've currently got three Cold War era helmets lying around to be made into "Orc" or some other fantasy helmets, with all sorts of strange ideas for them... I've already cut one flat. Maybe it'll make a nice kettle! Much to big for my head, at any rate, since so much padding goes into those dammed things!

I really like the paint. Doesn't look terribly clean, but in the stead of precision, you get an odd period feel to it. Very enjoyable, and thanks for sharing!

As for putting up more than one image at a time, well, you can't. So, don't worry;)

Now that you have them online, though, you will be able to post them mostly anywhere, with the [IMG] tags, and very easily, like this:

Cool Patric my freinds and I have just ordered a bunch to paint up for Pennsic to march around in. The results look good.

 Please be aware you may be cutting up something of value to collectors, and ruining something more valuable than your final results.

I know of plenty of cases of people doing such a thing.

Thanks for the link, James. Maybe I'll pick up a couple of those. One thing I've noticed about the infantry helmets I picked up is that they are as hard to bend cold as rock. Lacking a forge, we had to heat one up section by section with a torch, and it still took forever to push the small brim down!

For me I am leaving the shape as is, removing the chin strap brackets you can see on the bottom of the brim, and removing the rivets and modern liner and adding a few holes to put a period chin strap and helm liner in.

I wonder how many of these will be popping up now that a supply has been given?

yeah...i actually got this at a ham radio swap meet, who knows why it was there, but it was only like nine bucks. it is acrillic paint, but who knows the differance. all im wondering now is padding. i currently wear a quilted cap that is covered in 4 oz sued. this goes over my coif and all togeather it fits pretty tight, but i dont know how accurate that is. should i put some kind of suspension in it instead?

I've got one too. Added a band, some custom rivets and three flutes along the top. Which necessitated heating the thing up cherry red and letting cool, BTW.

Looks pretty cool with a leather suspension and chin strap added.

I've got an aluminum one (hard hat) with three flutes added and painted green and white checky. Pretty cool marshalling hat!

Doh! Well shows you how closely I read these things sometimes. Well what can you do, for $13 it makes a mighty fine kettle hat.

James B,
Modified like you did, what would you give it on the "Living History" authenticity scale 1-10?

Tim

I would say a 6, 6.5 tops. I has an ok shape but is not quite right and I know it's wrong. It's more about a decent look at a decent cost.

I am using it for the SCA this year. I am going to be part of the next Atlantian Queen's guards and wanted that soldier look cheap. I am also making a machine sewn cotte armor to match.
