"Speak softly & carry a big stick"
Thanks so much for shareing these pics, someday I would like to travel to these events with a video cam. Oh yeah and whoever that is with the big bruse... You need to get armour that protects you there a little better, a bruse like that could kill. I had a friend that fell from a ladder and brused his leg, a few days later a blood clot broke loose and went through his heart and killed him. I always hate seeing bruses like that as I have heard so many bad stories about related deaths since. Have fun but protect yourself
.

The grass was a biproduct of the constant rain through out the event... Normally it is a bit dustier than that
You should come out however, it is a good time!

I and everyone I know must be dodging bullets then! I've had prob. a hundred such bruises (and worse) over the last ten years and i've never heard of an SCA bruise killing someone!
Most likley your friend's bruising was far worse on the inside than the damage caused by sca weapons.

I hope your right but I think any bruse that is as bad as the one in the pic I saw here is dangerous, but I'm no doctor. I do know there was a lady who fell danceing and died some days later from the same thing I was talking about. Yes we do "all" dodge the bullet so to speak when we get bad bruses, That includes those of us who paintball.

I get bruises like that every week from Sir(s) Thorfinn, Randolph, Stephen, and/or Wesley.
One day I am going to a.) get SCA armour that is anachronistic and covers the inside of my thigh or b.) learn how to find "reverse".

Hehehe, that's my leg. You should have seen my friend's face though. Tough calibration out there... but nothing that would kill us. We just all bled a little, both internally & externally.
Honestly, meaddrinker, thanks so much for the concern. But to be perfectly frank, I'm running a *HELL* of alot more risk with 3 pins in my hip than a Steven Tyler hickey-bruise that will fade by the end of the week.

Thanks! It's gothic French... with some re-vamping to be done. New vambraces are in dire need. Then next year I'll have a new breastplate, to boot. Just waiting for my main armourer (Icefalcon) to start laser cutting so I'll sport some fleurs.

Awesome pictures!
This was my first year at Estrella, and was a ton of fun. I actually think I have a picture of you somewhere.. I'll have to see if I can find it.
You've got an awesome kit. Hope you don't mind my posting this. Feel free to chew me out if so and i'll remove it.

LOL, thanks.
That's a seriously sour look on my face, but that strange guy holding my hand is fairly cute.

You know, I saw that and KNEW it was your bruise. I wanted to get back here online and identify it before anyone else.![]()
Although, I have never actually seen the leg, that is what I thought it would look like!

LOL, Odo, I tell you what....
Come to Gulf Wars & fight me. If you leave a bruise like that on my thigh, I'll show it to you personally. No online pics about it.

Just got back from Estrella, it rained every night except saturday (thank the gods), the parties were saved.
I fought in the Burro Creek war in maybe 1980 and the armour changes since then are verry pleasing:
Almost NO barrel helms worn today. Almost all barred bascinets or Spangenhelms. Barrel helms were once the most common, easiest-made helm. Probably a rule-driven evolution. Didn't match the rest of the gear anyway.
Quite a few REALLY good portrayals of several different periods.
Alot of lamellar; metal or steel. Or japanese. Nice to see on early period portrayals instead of some of the cobbled-together alternatives.
A lot of riveted maille.
Relatively few visible over-size leather body bands or weight lifting belts. Usually worn by very big men. Also, few leather abortions of armor-like things. Probably cut into lamellar?
Helmets are of fairly high quality. Many spangs that LOOK like late roman, or anglo-saxon or lombard, etc. Many late period sallets with bevors, kettle hats, and occasional gladiator helms. Few simple spun pots.
ROMANS, in loricas and scutums
GREEKS in linothorax, muscled cuirasses, corinthian helmets, and hoplons.
A lot of splinted leather cuisses and vambraces.
Only one one cat's-eye barrel helm on a plate armor. Only one full japanese rig with a spangenhelm.
Most made some effort to keep armor periods at least not too glaringly anachronistic (see above).
Armor for the hips seemed to be the biggest trouble spot. One shiny full plate rig, with a very short fauld, and a large, wide shiny stainless athletic cup, but wiiiider. He couldn't have added a couple more lames? And no, it didn't resemble a brayette. Even the lamellar had trouble. Most were waist-length. A few covered the hips in large, non-articulated panels. The Japanese guys got it right, can't any one else figure out articulation in lamellar? Many had a breast plate of some sort, and cuisses, with not even a tunic to cover the jeans in between.
NO greaves on anyone but romans and greeks. Rule-driven, but still glaring.
Virtually every one wearing combat or engineer boots. Personally, I think the super-heavy weight fighters are afraid of not having the ankle support, and every one else is afraid of getting stepped on by these guys. Very glaring, and detracts from virtually every portrayal on the field. Turnshoes are slippery on mud, but what isn't? Calligae anyone?
Still a few elephant-bottom bell pants. Friends don't let friends wear these things. They are NOT merely loose trousers, and dont have to be this big for ANY leg armor. (Not talking about hakama)
A lot less visible plastic than I expected.
Unit surcoats, bigger than tabards, were commonly worn, and probably covered a multiplicity of sins.
Many, many period pavilions, despite the outcroppings of 'mushroom' tents
All-in-all pretty impressive for SCA. Still a lot of problems with awkwardly shaped gear, but that is what this board is for. I hope I didn't hijack your thread.

What a wonderful offer! I will not be at GW's this year. The first one that I have missed since I started in the SCA. The only redeeming thing is that I have good things going on, and that is what is preventing me from attending.
Moving into a new house on the 10th and I just had my knee repaired, after 20 years of pain it no longer hurts (but I can't fight on it yet).
But if I could get a rain check..............
I miss you too.
