Now, I like this - very unusual, but quite spiffy!
SO, culture/period that it is closest to? (if any?)

Wow, that's a lot of work on that byrnie for an ity bity price. Not historically accurate, but nice work none the less. The maille and plates shirt looks like a combination of lamellar and the Eastern-ish maille/plate shirts that I've seen. I bet it's comfortable.

Great fantasy piece! I wonder of he means lock-washers? If so, it would be very strong---but perhaps very heavy?
Yeah, the other piece reminds me of various Eastern mail and plates armours, though not exactly like an particular historical example. Very reminiscent of the terra-cotta warrior armours in look (but of course, not in construction method).
Cheers,
Tim

For the one with the plates...I hate to admit it but I'd grunge it up a bit and use it for warhammer/40k orc/k costume.....

Probably spring washers (which you may well call lock washers - like a single coil cut from a spring - he doesn't say I dont' think. My hauberk is made from them - very strong but VERY heavy!
