Hello.

This tyoe of bar grille was used for the Gioco del Ponte (google for details), some kind of proto- SCA heavy.
It was about a game of conquering a bridge and was held in Pisa, Italy, until the late 1700s. They used some kind of a club- shield- crossover. Imagine a fish or a cricket bat. The lowere dn was so shallow you could brab it with one hand, the other side was, well, fish- shaped with a vertical handle on the inside. It seems to have been used for both pushing and clubbing.
To make this game "safe", old armour bits were altered for this purpose, and grilles like the one you linked were attached to burgonets to better protect the face. These alterations usually were of quite rough workmanship.
