combat archery construction help

ok I am makeing combat archeyr stuff for blackstone raids what kind of glue do I use to glue on the knocks?
I have uhmw tappered blunts glued on with generic gorilla glue. but the knocks do not seam to glue on right.

should I use a different glue?

any one have any other ideas on how to make them work?

Is the glue failing to adhere to the Knock or the Shaft?

I have had no trouble using regular fletch tite if I sanded the surface of the shaft first. DO NOT use any of the super glue (cyanoacrylate) type adhesives, they will fail in use.

checked the glue bottle
lable reads as
titebond
polyurathane glue
it worked extra well on adding a splice to my spear.

I will give the fletch tite a shot.

I checked teh glue by firring at full draw 30 lb in to a target box at 8 feet

I am surprised if the glue worked on your spear that it failed on the arrow. Is it safe to guess that it is not adhering to the nock, you did not say.

How long are you letting the glue dry before testing? Most adhesives may set up in a short period of time but are not at full strength for 24 hours.

titebond and fletchtite are roughly the same thing. Check and make sure that it is designed to bond to those materials. I know some of the fletchtite is designed for fletchings and some others for nocks<-(the correct way to spell that)

the bottle instructions sead 4 hours as is is one that foamed maybe I need to switch to fletch tite and give it a go.

tryed the original glue again and it worked like a charm. I think my problem was over use of glue in the joint.

next step is taping on the apds

Nope, make arrows. Lots and lots and lots of arrows. :twisted:

I've had good luck with the Fletch-tite, but you do have to be careful not to use too much of it or it gums up instead of adhering.

I finally gave up and got a bunch of pre-made APD/knocks at Gulf Wars. I'll let you know how they work. I'm hoping to have them ready for Fool's War, or Border Raids at the latest. Taping on golf tube APD's was such a pain that I kept putting it off...and didn't have enough arrows to warrent putting on armor at GW.

I'm also making a first attempt at UHMW tips, so if you've found any tricks there, I'd love to hear about them (assuming they are legal). I'm going for the marshmellows...

Elize, where to start. First off go to the combat archery website previously posted and click on arrows and bolts, you will see a link that can tell you where UHMW is legal. Some tips for UHMW heads are.
1. Have a hot melt glue gun handy.
2. When putting the padding on the head use the glue gun to secure the foam, spread it kinda of thin and if it melts the uhmw a little bit don't worry it will stick better. This will keep things from shifting on you.
3. Drill the holes in the UHMW 1/64" smaller than your shafting material. This ensures a real tight fit. You will have to drive the fiberglass (if that is what you are using) in with a deadblow hammer.
4. When tapeing the foam down use a cross pattern with the strapping tape just once. You will not need more if you are covering them with electrical tape. Also make sure to pick out colors of tape that are not used much. Blue, green and black are real common and can be hard to find in a pile of arrows/bolts.
5. If you are making your UHMW heads please make sure you round the edges. We had a lot of them come through inspection point at Gulf wars that had not been done.
