Salut!

Yep, this site blew... There was no working drawbridge.

And we were only allowed to sleep in one or was it two of the three towers.

And to top it off, out of the 12 couples, we only had entrants from Germany, Austria, Sweden, England, and Finland.... Where are the entrants from the other 15 countries?

Chazz:

Plastic tiles with a honeycomb design. The spaces between the plastic bars are filled with earth and grass is sown in. The idea is that you get something more resistant (i.e. you can drive on it) than lawn that still looks "green". Normally, people use it for their private driveways and such. As recycled plastic is used these things seem to become increasingly popular over here.

Unfortunately, the plastic gets slick when wet - together with moss growing in the honeycombs this made the ground extremely slippery. Thus only the semi-finals and finals were fought in this list - the tourney participants were allowed to play in the mud for the first round. :wink:

Helms are the only parts that I think are required to have metal, and for some cultures coverd by our broad frame, it isn't even period-correct.

Yes, I'm in 80 pounds of stainless, cap-a-pied with sabatons, but it's up to the fighter themselves. I bruise easily, and I'm slow regardless of what I'm wearing...and I like the armour. I try to become both more effective and more authentic every day...but sometimes I fail.

The fellow dressed as a Viking (spangenhelm) in green with the centerpunch round shield looks realy rather close if you remove the grill!

Sir Cadogans rig looks quite nice as well.

Plenty of metal shoulders and legs, but no breastplates. Breastplates are really, really hard to do well. It's a rare art that gets no praise. I tried to make one, and it took forever.

It looked like a fun fight in a fun location, and they all had fun! It looks like it was fun -- no egos were on the line, and it is in the spirit of the first SCA tournament (and in Europe to boot)!

I believe that is a mail shirt one is wearing, with steel gauntlets.

There were no full-steel fighters there, but that is standard for Crown Tourney. My wife and I will be fighting in the West Crown, and I'll lumber onto the field with my 80 pounds of armour, look vaugely authentic, enjoy a few rounds, fight a bit off-line, and then enjoy the company of my friends some more (and get to the hotel for a cold shower and a soak in a hot-tub).

Have fun and come out and fight in Crown every time.

If you don't show up in your armour, we with the cap-a-pie suits aren't represented in Crown, and have no reason to complain when our views aren't heard.

It's like voting.

Even if I don't stand a chance, I'll be there, give a good showing for myself, fight until I'm exhausted and physically unable to continue, hopefully get photographed, hob-nob with the powers that influence the SCA and maybe even get the authenticity voice heard at the level of the King. Afterall, I will have probably crossed swords with the future Monarch, and who knows...I might have influenced his opinion some.

Without our participation in Crown, we really have no right to complain our views aren't heard. Where else can you beat on your future leadership, and convince them with a stick?

Do you mean on the chest?

I wear a 14 gauge breastplate when I fight hand and a half.

The guys from Italy had really nice breastand backplates. (they drove)

Most of the partisipants came from out of town (Flew). They are limited to 20 pounds of baggage. Most helms weighs between 10 to 20 pounds, you do the math.

But how about this picture of RoC.

Full arms, full legs, Spaulders, flat camail, pigface..... All he is missing is the chest protection. But then again, he is early to mid 1300s.

Could you fit you kit into a 20 pound bag, along with toilet articles, and court garb?

You mean Sir Wilglaf's "almost as old as the Society itself" 35lb monster? It is a cool helmet.... The plates are solid bronze with angelic figures etched into them.

It's not *quite* as bad as Eorl Giles wrote. You get 20 *kilos*, not 20 *pounds*. Not per bag, total. If you are a couple, and only one of you will be fighting, it's reasonably easy to pack for a weekend event. You take one armour bag, and one bag (or more) for both your garb, feast gear, toiletries, sleeping bags...

Last time I flew it was 15 kilo.. not 20.. ;-)

Shield, weapon.. and if you have full legs, full arms, full breast and back plate like Josh is suggesting, it cannot be done.

Coupled with the fact that Ryan Air does not always allow ANY carry on baggage and it becomes really hard. :-)

Ah, if only we had the US baggage regulations over here... It's rather expensive, not to mention timeconsuming, to fly across Europe via the US east coast.
