Hey Mike!
The foot is healing, they say. They are still cutting it every week so I dunno how that's working but with luck this monday will be the last of that.
Do yourself a big favor and wait on the bucket until you can get the right one shipped to you. It's worth it. I've fought for many years in next to no body armor but a helm is not worth skimping on for any reason. The one Tim photoshopped up is a very reasonable first helmet that will do you just fine till you can afford to upgrade. I know shipping is a bitch, but arent you coming to the states in a few weeks?Maybe picking it up there would work? Dunno.

Animal - glad the foot is on the mend! Soon have you smiting people again! :)
I will probably end up going for that A-B helm. Unfortunately it's more like 6 months or so before I'm in the USA - can't wait that long, so I'll probably end up forking out for the shipping. Still won't be a bad starter helm for the money.
After that I'll save up and get a custom - probably from Beathan at A&C - pretty reasonable prices. We shall see!

Mike, contact Beathan about what type of SCA helm you want. I truely believe he will give you the best deal for the best helm.

I had a friend purchase a spiral topped persian/magyar inspired stainless steel helm for SCA combat from Beathan in 14ga and 16ga and it only cost her $180 + shipping.

I am purchasing a permbridge style Great helm in 14ga mild steel for SCA combat and beathan is charging me $80 + shipping (since he is over there across the pond with you, shipping should be much less).

I have handled his work and feel very safe wearing his product.

Also, his customer service and turn around time is excellent.

He is also willing to work from sketches. That is how the Persian magyar helm was made. I drew up some sketches of what we wanted and Beathan really came through with the manufacture. Now, me being a graphic designer, I can draw well so he had really good sketches to go off of. So, if you go that route, try to be as precise as you can.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

I started with ashcraft baker and they make some very sturdy stuff. I still have my spangen (w/ removable facegrill). The stuff that they sell is very good for beginners such as yourself. With a little dress-up some stuff can look very good. I use there stainless legs and clamshells still to this day.

I have used an A/B spangen for a good while now and i like it alot. I'm going to attach a brim to it and convert it into a kettle helm, it should look pritty spiffy afrer that. definately a good product for the price.

definitely don't recommend a helm made of less than 14 guage for non-dished parts, and 12 guage for dished.

16 guage mild is the minimum-and it will need to be beaten out every week.

14 guage mild will get dented noticaby within a year.

It's not worth L40 for a helm you'll end up throwing away.

so then i ask those of you who have a 12g helm, does it ever get dented? what about 14g sides and such?

Orc,
I've got a close helm nearly like the one you linked to before. I do not use a chin strap with it, but instead have the chin area padded. The helm works very well for me.
