cuir bouilli bevor

Post by Uilleag »

I know, it sounds strange, and definately a fantasy / SCAism piece.

The problem was, I have this beautiful new helm that I bought at Gulf Wars...the only problem is that a regular gorget won't work it. The face plate sticks out too far and any size thrusting tip can fit right up inside. It fits right, just not the best face design. So I needed a gorget that would protect my throat and under my chin to make the helm legal.

Remember folks, leather I can do, re-engineering a helm that I love the look of is not my bag. Besides, the amount of metal work involved is well beyond my capabilities.

Here are some pics....the ones of me wearing it are really grainy, sorry for the poor quality, they are self portraits into the bathroom mirror......

You know, if you produced those commercially, you'd have a market consisting of us giraffes that can't get passed without an aventaille. Personally I'd like to see the chin piece curl up around the chin and jaw a little more, though.

I really, really like that... I'd have to agree that if it came up and covered more of the chin it would probably be cooler. But, under a helmet, I'm sure it hardly matters! I could also imagine that gettin' a bit more in your way.

How do you move your head down?

To answer all of the questions....first, I do offer them commercially, the bevor was custom made specifically for my helm, but I can make them however the customer prefers.

This one was specifically designed for me, and the way my new helm fits. Trevor, I cannot bend my head down, but I can move it side to side, which is the way I move my head when I fight. I do not look down or move my head down while fighting, so that is not an issue.

Thank you all for the compliments!

Does it interfere with the chin strap, or does it work ok?

It works just fine with my chinstrap. It doesn''t fit that snugly, to interfere with it.

I'm probably just paranoid, but I'd worry about the chance of pressure from behind/up pulling something in the neck with the part of the bevor at the top/front of the throat of acting as a lever. I understand that your fighting method/style may not contain that movement, but your falling in the bridge battle and getting smooshed by 15 other guys wearing armor might. Remember though, I have no neck  so my perspective differs a bit.

As always, great work though. It's a bevor, without the worst part of a bevor (breathing).
