West/Antir Remember Yreka CA, the somtimes war site?

Post by Robert_C »

Yreka, CA has sometimes served as a site for the West / Antir war.
I have been asked by some members of the town, Yreka CA, parks committee what would make the park more attractive to the SCA a a more frequent war site. So, I am asking for some suggestions to take back to them. What would make it more attractive / frequently used as a war site?
Yes, I already said more camping space. The space was there, they just didn't think we were going to need it. So, they did not open it until the situation in the upper park are was already out of hand. Everyone is aware of this.
However, what else. Of course I first said," fixed forts!" Can anyone find me some links to some forts that would serve our purposes?
Can anyone else think of anything, the more multi-use, the better. (Even if the use is paint ball and airsoft; however the city is working with the forest service on a paintball/airsoft area.)

Move it out of Yreka?

Seriously, fourth of July weekend in Yreka can be a bit brutal to us soft northerners. Last time it was held there I was pretty much done by the time I managed to trudge to the warfield.

I like the Crescent City site much better. Crescent City has much nicer weather IMO (wind I can handle, 100+ degree weather with no swimmable body of water makes me not want to come back).

I guess maybe some kind of swimming hole? Shower facilities? (trying to be helpful heh)

I hated this Site. The Parking was lousy. the Heat was stiffling The trafic jam in and out sucked. Why not just go a few more miles up to the site in Medford Orgeon the one up in the mountains. I know this is in Antir and yes it is Wests time to host but the Western Sites suck. The only realy fun West Antire sites are when Antire holds them.

Personallly I prefer the Ashland the site the most. The Cresent City site sucked because of the unending wind (giving rise to the "Wind/Antir war"). To tell the truth most anywhere not on the coast is going to be horrendously hot in July, but I can always opt to cover up, drink water and head for the shade. I just can't stand wind like in Cresent City.

To be constructive I'd say a permanent Fort would probably make people think about enduring the heat. Parking, showers, running water and toilets might also go towards changing peoples minds (a flush toilet will do wonders to peoples mind sets).

While it would be hot as hell and people would complain about scuffing up their armor if they fell in the wrong place, the Lava Beds in N Cali would be an interesting setting for some large scale battles. Imagine storming Cpt. Jack's stronghold with a couple hundred men. No building of fortifications necessary, theyre already there. Maybe a cave battle where one team has to hold the mouth of the cave. (use one of the big lava tubes that arent on the visitor maps) Even the opportunity for some forest battles at Medicine Lake.

Too bad its a national park and they would never go for it.

There are tubes that are not in the Park Service area. One along Hwy A12 comes to mind.

I was just asking because the Park is likely to get a $500k grant. One of the things that they have to do is to pave the north side of the lake in order to make it wheelchair accessable.

As far as flush toilets, there are some. However, most have been removed in order to make sure that the ones that remain have handicapped access (getting rid of the urinals and the stalls, just one toilet per facility to make room).

The city likes the events and was just wondering if there is any thing that they could do to make the site more SCA friendly. The answers here are about the same as I got on the SCA west list. There isn't really anything that can be done. Yreka is, and will remain, a last of all possibe choices type of site.

It probably dosn't help that there is no near by shire. The are a is just too big considering the age of the members.

Ohwell, I would rather have the money put into airsoft facilities (although the plan will probably focus on paintball instead). I just have to work on a way of saying that there is nothing that can be done to make the site more SCA friendly; in a manner that keeps the welcome mat out.

I realize that my First commet was very negative so let me make a Positive Recomendation. I Wall that could have a Gate where we could fight thruogh it. Definatly Better parking also. I liked the Woods battle but iot would have been nice to have a fresh water source near by also. I hope this might help

The Yreka site was fine in a lot of ways. I can deal with the trek to the battlefield. I can deal with the lack of showers. I can even deal with the parking offsite.

The key things are the need for running potable water, sufficient camping space on green grass, adequate gate security and overly competant and well organized autocrats.

These are MUSTS. Deal with these things first and then think about castles and other nice-to-haves.

The unending wind was an anomaly. It usually does not blow like that in CC. Further, once 80% of the people left in the evening, the wind died down.
