I very much like the houndskull that you made for me. I am interested purchasing one of these bascinets

It looks like these are 14 guage mild steel. Correct? This is not a problem, I just want to verify.

What size head will the bascinets fit?

Could you add an interchange grill to a bascinet and if you could add it what would it cost and how much longer to ship?

The helmets look beautiful. For my personal taste, however, I wouldn't fight in 14ga mild steel here in Atlantia. I used to have a Windrose 14ga mild steel bascinet (which I "loaned" and will never get it back or any money for it) but I upgraded to 12ga stainless after some dents and seeing stars on occasion.

and that 12 ga SS is only the liner :twisted:

I grew up in Charlottesville, and played there for a few years a long time ago.

You are right - Bascinets are from 14ga mild - scull and visor.
Bargrill is unavailable till september/october -have too much events now, sorry.

Well we have full contact fight with steel axes and swords and 14 ga is quite enough for us. As for me 12 ga stainless could be too hard that mean that your head feels like in the bell when you get hit.

I can attest to the quality of Beathan's work - I have a custom close helm that I use for jousting made by him and it not only looks great but has taken repeated direct shots from lances without so much as a blemish.

If I had the money, I would definitely be picking up one of the bascinets for Fiore.

Owning one of Beathan's helms is all I need to know to jump on this offer. I have already sent payment for one of the bascinets. I fought in 16 gauge mild helms for my first 20 years in the SCA. During that time I trained a great deal, going from unskilled, to skilled to KSCA to Royal Peer. I went through 3 helms in that time period. I have no worry about a 14 ga mild steel helm. Helms don't last forever in SCA combat. If you want a beautiful helm forever, keep it on the shelf. If you want a nice helm that ocassionally gets dents that you have to pound out, these will be great for you. I expect to have to add an aventail to this to cover the sides of the throat, but at this price, I can well afford that.

Someday I will have time to post the pictures of the Houndskull bascinet that I recieved last week from Armour and Castings. I am going to fight in it with the suspension liner, with a few modifications. I have removed about half of the raw cotten from the back side of the 8 padded sections that go around the head at the brow line and inserted 1/4" thick EVA closed cell foam in the back (helm side) of each section. I have also added EVA foam above the suspended liner to absorb some of the shock from blows from above. However, one would have to look really closely to see any foam, even if inspecting the inside.

I would probably use more foam for a beginning fighter.

Do the bascinets come with the liner, or is that an add-on? How about vervilles?

Hello Lloyd - I'll check it presence at monday - just returned from Wolin - there was Viking festival and there we had pretty fine battle - one of our guys got his hip pierced by the spear. I can post photos from festival at the monday if interesting.

Sounds like you had a great time! I am still recovering from being knocked unconscious jousting a few weeks ago in Michigan (and no, it wasn't a problem with your helm, but the buffe/grande gard combination that I was wearing for Realgestech) and the resulting post-concussive syndrome. Gotta love our hobby, eh??
