Trying to find a reenactment society to join

Hi I am wondering if there are any active medieval reenactment groups in New Jersey I can join. Im 16 years old and I cant seem to find one. I also have a very low budget ($125) and can only afford basic clothing so expennsive reenactmet is out of the question for me. I found several on google but they were last updated in 2003 so they are dead.

I live in middlesex county but anywhere in New Jersey is OK or even southern New York or eastern Pennsylvania I can go to as well.

Wolfe Argents second Lance is in New Jersey, and recruting. We portray a chambre of the 10th company of the ordinances of Charles the Bold between 1471-1477.

Shawn,

There are a number of different groups, each with its own particular style, so you'll need to decide exactly what it is you want out of re-enactment.

The largest group, portraying the broadest historic and geographical range, is the Society for Creative Anachronism. The SCA is not known as the most historically accurate group, but I like it anyway.

Groups like chef's (http://www.wolfeargent.com/) and a few similar ones are generally smaller, focused on a much narrower period & geographical area, and much more focused on careful research and accuracy in their portrayals.

There are also various Live Action Role Playing groups. They tend to be cheaper to get involved with, however they are even less historically accurate and make little to no attempt to do research. Some individuals may do so, but as a group they are not into research.

Avoid the SCA if you want to do the type of thing seen in Rev War or Civil War presentations. That is not what we do.

Well I dont think im going to join the SCA yet anyway cause I only have cloths and no armor and I cant even afford even the cheapest stuff or even a helmet. Does the SCA have more than rattan fighting cause rattan fighting is not my style cause it is real fighting with fake weapons as opposed to fake fighting with real weapons. Real fighting im not ready for yet. I would join markland but they require you to be 18 to fight (I think). But I think I will join one of the smaller LARP groups that only accepts humans as characters cause I really dont care much about historical accuracy other than all the people being from countries that existed and all the people being humans and not elves or ogres. Does anyone know of any LARP groups in New Jersey? If so post them please. Thanks

markland allows fighting at 16...the head of one of the local groups is a good friend of mine.I do know some people in a larp group but it's very fantsy oriented I think(I haven't been there myself)

The Adrian Empire allows unarmored fighting (which I believe you'd call "fake") starting at age 13. At 16, you could also do rapier combat. There's chapters in southern NY, eastern PA, MD, and a small group starting up in southern NJ. The focus in Adria is Western Europe, 1066-1603.

*Most* people in the SCA are not fighters so there is lots to do other than fighting.

^ What he said, my wife didn't understand this either though until I took her to a barony meeting with all the laurels and artisans of the area. She thought it was all about fighting until then.

PS you can fight Light weapons at 16. Takes a very little armor. Think you can start setting up your armor kit (if thats what you want to do), and racticing at 16, just no tourneys until 18.

if it was done in the middle ages sombody can show you somthing about it in your area there is some stained glass people,some brewers,armourers,a large group of youth fighters(which will provide loner gear to get you started)garb makers,just off the top of my head..I believe you are in either the baronie of settmore swamp or carillion.at the end of this month there is a renn faire in lakewood nj check eastkingdom.org.you can gather a substantial amount of info from this event about who and what is in the sca around you.

If you were in Las Vegas The Company of the Cup would help you get set up with clothes--you would have to buy shoes--and you could be a part of the trebuchet crew, or a serving lad or squire. Later on you could buy your kit and become an archer perhaps, if you wanted to do a military portrayal, or a professional civilian, if you wished.

Okay, Shawn, I think it's time for you to show us you mean it, and aren't just trolling. Right now it looks like you're seeing how much you can wheedle rather than undertaking to make it happen of your own efforts, and yes, sweat.

About the SCA, go to http://www.sca.org -- and from reading the pattern of your posts, be advised I was tempted not to post it as a link, but oblige you to do your own work, like a grown man. Read just about everything on the SCA main site and concentrate particularly on the Kingdoms' sites nearest to you, which are East and Atlantia.

As for getting armor: if you want it, you'll get it, and you'll raise the money to get it or to get the tools to make it. There are two ways to get armor: either you spend a lot of money or you spend a lot of time. You are currently better fixed for time.

Wolfe Argent has members your age as well, and we *can* help with getting you begun on your kit, if you are truely interested. One member of the New Jersey is a page, that is an equestrian one, who handles a boarspear and sword as well.

Thanks for all the sites. I think I may join either the Markland, or the Adrian Empire. I already got cloths so clothing wont be a problem. SCA I will do when I am older and more experenced. But I think I will start with the Adrian Empire for now cause Markland has an 18 year old rule for recreational combat and I could use two years to train. Thank you for all the help you have given me.

markland is 16 for full access to there frat fighting...www.markland.org
