LF: Not armor... Wood makeup box maker

Post by Brian de Lorne »

There is a box that I have seen ladies in the SCA use that I want to get for my wife. It is a square wood box with a mirror that folds into the lid when closed, and can prop open the lid for use of the mirror. I heard a merchant at pennsic this year had them, and I'm trying to find out who that is. Mainly used for makeup and jewelry I imagine.

Can anyone point me to the supplier?

Thanks!

Brian,

I purchased one for my Lady this year at Pennsic. The merchant is from Canada. I talked with him for a bit and if my memory serves me, he does not have a web presence or accept credit cards. You may have to wait until next Pennsic.
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

I have seen them also. Thought the ones I have seen have been made here in the Outlands. If you have a picture I am pretty sure any competent woodworker should be able to make one.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

HOLD THE PHONE! I have one that I have never used. I'd sell it, but I'll have to think of a price---or you could make me an offer. Twenty bucks plus shipping maybe?

That sounds good to me. Don't suppose you could shoot me a picture of it maybe? Just to make sure we're on the same page. :D

If this is it, I'm a happy guy!

The link to the Basketman doesn't seem to be working right fyi.

Greetings,

I believe that the Canadian merchant that you mentioned that has these is

Tancred's Tangled Wood
346 Jarvis St.
Fort Erie, ON L2A 2S8 Canada
tanglewood44@hotmail.com

He carries these mirror boxes and is at pennsic every year. I'm sure if you contacted him he could help you out.

I would love a photo of one of these. My knight use to have one, but he has no idea where he put it, and I have been trying to find one of my own.

Baron Tancred from Rising Waters in Ealdormere. I will be seeing him next Saturday (the 22nd), if you'd like I can pass along your contact information to him and let him know you're interested.

Tancred doesn't have a web page but he's at Pennsic every year right down the road from Historic Enterprises, he sells feast gear boxes, mirror boxes, banner poles and other wooden articles.

I don't know about his cross border policy so I'm not sure if he sends them to the US or not. I can pick one up, bring it across the border and mail it to you if you'd like. If you're not in a huge hurry or worried about it being damaged in shipping my knight is in Atlantia, I won't see him again until April or May but I could give it to him and you could meet up with him.

I sent an email to the address posted above, but have recieved no response yet. I imagine he will respond in due time, so I will wait to see what he has to say. I appreciate your offer greatly. I'm not in a huge hurry, however christmas was a general target date if possible. Shipping wouldn't bother me as long as it was packaged good. Just in case my info is

Tarquin,

my wife & I will be there this weekend for the third leg of the Inter-Baronial archery shoot & we'll be in Rising Waters for Investiture when Tanc & Rosie step down November 26th.

Brian,

I'll print your contact information and make sure that Tancred gets it. We have two of his boxes, I bought one before having my eye surgery five or so years ago and it was invaluable for putting contact lenses in at events. My wife bought one 'cuase she's a girl and they like mirrors .

If memory serves me correctly he was selling them for somewhere in the neighborhood of $20 & $30 for the small/large. We got lucky because Rosalinda, Tanc's wife, used to decorate the tops of some of them. Mine has a woodburned mounted knight in armor and Kiersey (the pretty lady who married me) has one with a painted dragon on it.
