There were ancient Greek helmets with wings, mostly decorative(the wings, anyway). There is a lot of period art from the 15thC depicting wings on helmets, as part of the classical art rebirt.

Here's a Hellenistic example of an "Italo-Attic" helmet, simply meaning that it was a helmet of the Attic type found in Italy! :D

Thee is a celtic helmet that not only has wings, it has an entire bird, and quite large as well, its thought that the birds wings would actually flap when the wearer would walk. there are also early celtic helmets with horns, the horns are bronze though not animal horns

Hal,

Mercury is the Roman name for the Greek God Hermes, who was the messenger of Zeus (or Jupiter, as the Romans would say!)

-Gregory-

(p.s. I mention this because Hermes was already acknowledged in the thread.)

I just had the Silver Alter of St. James up for another post. 14th century Italian, though I don't recall the specifics off the top of my head.

Check out the guy in the upper left.

There were also plenty of crests with wings, horns, fish, ......

Or talons?
http://www.manesse.de/img/025.jpg

A nice hat?
http://www.manesse.de/img/055.jpg

etc, etc
I like the fish:
http://www.manesse.de/img/050.jpg and http://www.manesse.de/img/075.jpg

Therefore, everyone should have fish on their helms.

I may be wrong, but I think you will find the guy with the "wings" is actually meant to be the devil and the wings are actually his horns. He is in the crowd dragging Jesus away. Notice the smug look on his face. Very Hollywood cut shot type of stuff.

ive seen a pic somewhere- idk where- that showed vikings ata shore in armour- and the leader had medium sized wings on his helm, it seemed to be held on by rivets pinching the wing between the helm and a lop-sided oval- it looked authentic- ill see if i can find it

That is also an Italo-Attic helmet, much like the one I posted. It would date to somewhere around 300 BC, approximately.

Thanks. I thought it might have come from the Manesse Codex, but I'm at work and my books are at home so I couldn't check.

Gregory, may I ask where you found your Italo-Attic helmet? They had some pretty neat stuff in the Hellenistic period - my fav is the Phyrgian helmet, aka. "smurf hat"...

Thanks,
