late 14th cent hourglass gaunts

Post by Ken Zicker »

Howdy all, since we had so much fun with the last post I made about hourglass gauntlets  I figured I'd post these, under construction .042 spring steel with full fingers for SCA combat,

Jehan please note the flair on the wrist 8)

coments and observations welcome(contsructive being the operative word Jehan :P ) since these are the first I've made with full fingers
Thanks
Ken

Thanks guys, knitebee I don't think so, right now I have the last plate of the fingers scalloped out to sit all the way up to the knuckle, but when I go to final assemble them I'll see how the fingers ride I may switch to the knuckle rider if the fit seems off

Looking good Ken. FYI, the "knuckle rider" is an important historical feature, but as your going for good usuable SCA finger gaunts, you may find they add too much to cost. Anyways, as we discussed in email, I'm very interested in a pair.

Thanks Michael, that info is definitly good to have, I figured since they had wrap around fingers they're kinda outta the totally accurate league anyway :) I'll be e-mail'n you to get your measurements as I have 2 weeks off of work starting Dec. 18th and would like to get the bulk of the hammerwork on your stuff done

Ummmm

YMMV but they do not have to wrap completely.

I believe the current standard is "hocky glove or equivelent" so accurate guantlets that are padded (like with mouse pad) pass.

Sir Lex (AAKA Brighthelm) has some made in this fashion. His pass with no problem.

I still want a pair of these in spring steel (esp if the articulation problems get worked out and ya make em without the overly bulky wrap around fingers)

That is exactly what I wanted! I need your home adress so I can send you the traceings of my hands. I think you sent it before but I can't find it now. I am again, as always, awed by your skill!

I'll get some pic's of the side in a day or so when I get the holes for the leather straps punched so I can pre-assemble one and show it straight and bent

Murdock the cost on these is 450.00 in spring steel your choice of period fingers or SCA fingers less for mild and I'm still working on whether or not to do them in stainless

Sasuke you the man, these were fun to do in spring steel I'm a little timid about get'n 'em done in stainless

thanks all

Ken, I missed these since I was deploying. Found it while looking through old posts, and they look great! How'd they turn out?
