And here's the tooled gothic suit...

Post by mckron »

Here's the tooled gothic suit I did, again, period patterns but done in leather. Why? To play. It's part of the fun.

It's made out of 9oz leather with 18Gauge stainless in behind, but only in certain spots and articulates really well. I have to make a new one and do the full suit, legs, arms, everything.

Hmmm, I don't think that rug is very period...

But seriously, totally bitchin suit. I'd be interested to hear Master Uilleag's opinion on the jorb.

Nice work Ron, you should show more of your stuff. I saw the leather you did for Tirian. Very pretty.
Nice to see you on the Archive.

Ed,

I am extremely flattered by your comments here, but I am not a master of anything. I am simply a craftsman who loves his work.

From what I can tell from the picture, the piece is simply exquisite. I would love to see some better detailed shots of the embossing and the construction processes. The lighting doesn't really lend itself to a detailed inspection of the work, but what I can see is beautiful.

mckron,

If you don't have a way of posting more detailed photos, I would be more than happy to provide hosting space. I have a very good program for clarifying and enhancing digital pictures as well. In any case, I would love to see how it was essembled and better detail of the tooling.

I am utterly at a loss for words....Whoa. I mean....whoa.

Is it fully articulated or are the lames on the breast and back riveted rigid?

Can't wait to see all the other parts.

Wow

Griffin! Good to hear from you! I'm glad you liked Tirian's tombstone, what did he think of it?

Uilleag,

Here are a couple of closer, hopefully, higher detailed pics of the gothic suit. The pics were taken with a disposable camera and the suit is finished and moved on so I can't take more. Sigh, it's sad when our babies grow up and leave. I'll PM you on the hosting issue, it might be a better solution in the long run.

This armour is fully articulated, both side-to-side and front and back (yay sliding rivets!)

Ron

So, being new to forums in general, why is it that some photos will show and others are 'download' only?

I mean no offense whatsoever here, but...

I just can't understand why you'd do this. Why would anyone cover up steel plate with tooled leather? If you don't want steel armour, then why not just make the whole thing out of leather?

Again, I don't mean for that to sound as insulting as it comes off. I'm genuinely curious here...

Heh, the whole thing is made out of leather, I had the steel set on hand as a very easy way to form it. It's all leather.

Oh, Okay.

I'm so sorry; I misunderstood. I had read what you wrote and concluded that you had permanently riveted or glued this tooled leather *over* a steel one.

I am much more impressed now that I know this is stand-alone leather armour.

Mea culpa.

Now, Millenium, Josh was curious. The pic I put up showed me doing something weird and kinda surperfluous. I mean going thru all that trouble of making shiny, fluted gothic and then covering it with leather? The modern day (SCA) equivalent would be spending days and days riveting maille and then covering it up with plastic. And, when Josh heard it was all leather he apologized for 'sounding' rude, and I didn't think he was rude at all. Thanks for speaking up, however, I don't think we need to shout at anyone.

Cheers,

Ron

I actually didnt mean to do it all caps.... it just kinda peeves me.... why does one need a reason to make what they want?

Because they want to but still, no need to say what you did after he had apologised and ti was cleared up. It's in our nature to be curious.
