Helm Idea

Post by Thomas of Tadcaster »

Ok, everyone open your textbooks (AAotMK) to page 52. The helm on the knight in the relief, how easy would it be to make it SCA legal (meaning a slat back). Right now I have no where and no way of making it, so what would it cost to have made for me. Nothing too fancy just 14g mild and around the back of the band, piercings to hang a fake mail coif. For some reason I like the stylings of this helm alittle more than the standard "pot" helm. I drew up some drawings of what I'm invisioning, but have no where to post them, but I can email it to anyone who is interested.

There are several people in the Middle Kingdom and Kingdom of Calontir that fight in slat backed helms.

The construction method that appears to work well is to go up a couple of gauges in metal (ex. make the slats out of 12 ga steel), rivet them into the "cap" of the helm, and reinforce them with a "band" of steel towards the lower edge of the slats.

There is an example of this type of helm on www.mandrakearmory.com - click on the "Gallery" link and page down to the 6th to 11th centure Spagen Helm.

IceFalcon also has a helm of this type available - see: http://icefalcon.safeshopper.com/1/49.htm?113

Otto does one as well as Lonely Mountain Forge. Likewise, I think any skilled armourer can oull it off well.
