covering mild steel with leather

Post by Shamey »

Got my set of Stonekeep Armoury's 'ugly' knee cops and am extremely thrilled that they completely cover the points on my knees (I's got some chubby knees). My plan is to make padded cuisses and just have the knees attached via points. Now..(to finally get to the point) since they are mild and well I'm the lazy sort that isn't good at armour upkeep would it be feasible to cover them in leather? Other than the wear and tear on the leather and periodic replacement, are there any cons to this idea? I'm thinking it would help inhibit rust but wonder if it would actually do the opposite?

Merci!

A great idea, the only thing i would change is painting the knees with some rustoleum spraypaint before gluing the leather to the knee. Good luck! :D

Rustoleum spraypaint inside, two coats, Turtle Wax outside, and never mind the leather -- it will simply hide any rust that develops. And hold any moisture you get into right next to your metal.

An application of Turtle Wax is good for most of a season anyway. The other thing, Shamey, is that armor won't allow you to be lazy about maintenance: anybody with a suit of armor that does anything more violent than stand on an armor stand in your "manse's" foyer is always fixing his armor -- busted straps, blown rivets, the mail's got metal moths -- that sort of thing. Something's always getting busted; it's actually kind of fun putting it right again, especially if you come up with something that works better than the last outing did.

So bite the, uh, crossbow bolt, get the stuff to fix with -- the wax, a brown scrubbie for derusting, a six of your favorite beverage, and most important, an armoring/fighting buddy or two -- and make maintenance as fun as possible. You don't have to do this by your lonesome.

You could always have the metal tinned then cover it with leather. Tinning is an easy process, you just heat up the metal and stick the tin to it and watch it melt. The tin I have seen used is easily available through auto body restoration places and other merchants along the same venue.

Tinning is very durable and will last through all but the strongest gouges. Leather covering your armor is a very cool thing, don't let people disuade you on this, it can look rather beautiful and will also give you distinguishable look out on the field ( if executed correctly most people look like a bar stook seat because they use rivets that are to big ).

Do some research into leather/fabric coated armours and you will see what I am talking about :)
