Gauntlet down, rest of armour next.

Post by Melee »

Well to day i finished my guantlet, it may not look good and my be made of only 3 peaces of metal and helt to gether buy just as many rivets, but its there in all its low crabon glory. Gives me a warm fuzzy felling every time i put that sucker on my hand and it slides of and hits my foot or scratces my arm when it slides on me. -Sigh-. Well actual its not finished because i still have to go back over it with my wire wheel, strap the sucker, finish it off with some stuff that i rub on the metal, and finaly engrave it with my pothetic mark. Well thats tomarrows job. But other that that it looks fairly good, to me, but i think some one with better knowlege and standard would throw it back at me and say something bad, but so right. Any way im pround of my 5 hours of labor but in to 5 lbs of steel. As for the other parts to my suit, ill start on the breast plate tommarow(thrusday) and i hope ill be done but the same time next week, but i hope not. Also i need a new rawhide hammer or some other non metal hammer, i was using a rubber mallet(2lbs) it worked well ,but chuncks or it came off till it split in half. Well thats that.

Ok first congrats on making your first piece of armour. Gauntlets probably weren't the best first project but that doesn't matter.

Here's a tip on making things that turn out better. Take your time.

If you'd spent 20 hours on the gauntlets instead of 5. Being carefull to complete each step cleanly and properly you'd get a much better end result.

Remember it's your first time. It's supposed to take a long time for you to do things properly since you've gotta learn as you go.

If it scratches your arm when it slides on your it's going to cut you if you ever fight in it. Don't fight in it. Sound like you need to spend more time deburring the edges next time.

Anyone who would throw it back at you and say something bad is a jerk. You admit it's not the best and you deserve the credit for making the effort.

Congrats on actually making something, instead of being like a certain Editor, and just think about making it.

If you can, please get some pics up. If it's bad (as you seem to think it is), you can expect some harsh comments. But remember that it's your first try, and things'll get better. Also, remember that by actually making something, you've put yourself above a whole lot of other posters here.

Actually posting pictures will get you constructive criticism. Which means you'll know where you went wrong for next time.

Hey Melee--
Don't be so tough on yourself! You are among friends here Image Just keep trying. My first piece was a gorget that took me almost 15 hours. After it was done I was pretty proud of myself. But I'll bet a ton of people could find things wrong with it! Come to think of it I should post a picture after I get the lining done...

I dont know were you guys got off to thinking that this is my first peice of armour. I made 3 so far. A spaulder, the guantlet, and somthing that resembels a helm. But i dont have the luxery of a digital cammer, or a camer and a scanner. But but the time i get the hole suit done i should get my uncle(his a profesinal photographer) to take a pics of it. And sience he makes things look better in a picture than in real life his the man to take to. Also i didnt know that i should spend 20 hours on a three peice qauntlet. But thank you for telling me that befor i comepleted my breast plate. Realy, thank you. And ill take more time and work with more time consuming acuratcy.

Well, Melee not everybody gets around to reading every post. And even if they did there's a lot of posters to keep up with. I had read about your spaulders but hadn't heard about your helm.

But before I start to sound all grown up just let me say congratulations and keep on hitting that metal. You can only get better by doing. And that puts you ahead of the game. I took me about 2 years to get up the nerve to make my first pair of gauntlets.

Well he is ahead of me (for now) okay this is why *coucgh* *rant* *cough* Ok my mom is REALLLLLLLLLLLLY overprotective for gods sake i cant make wooden or even carboard armor she doesnt like the idea od "armor" but she also wants me to get my 200 pound butt off the computer so i said to her and i quote " If you want me off the computer why dont you let me build my own armor I WOULD BUY ALL MY SUPPILES" She says "It's too dangerous for you" nag nag nag nag nag nag nag nag.

and well I can buy armor but cant make it and TODAY FINALLY she agreed to let me make it at my dads house although i can't bring it home (my parents are divorced) The only reason i would want to bring it to my house is because i would REALLY like to kick the "stuffing" out of melee. But, With school coming up, me needing to get above a 3.50 gpa, only free time on weekend, homework. I think i should just wait till i move out of this place. ------End Of Rant----

Ya and now that i think of it building wooden and card board armour wasnt that bright of an idea, now being a gunious i realized that i needed metal not only tin foil but steel. And Bloodrose now that im making armour and have more of an idead on how to fight not to metion all(well not realy) the exercise i have been doing, you wouldnt stand a chace figthing me. I mean you havent left you house in three months. And hope fully soon we'll see whos the better armourer/fighter and im guessing his nake starts with a N. Or on the internet and M. Just make shur we make the armour right and dont use metal weapons.

That reminds me of my first gauntlet. I riveted 7 pieces of steel to a piece of leather and strapped it on with leather thongs. All the edges are rough, and most are sharp, but I was very proud when I finished it. Although it is of such poor quality, I learned from all the mistakes I made. I haven't made any real gauntlets since then, but I'm planning to, and I'll post pictures of bothe the first one and the new one.
