Under Arm help

IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢m making my first shirt with sleeves but IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢m lost on how to do the underarm seems can any one help me out ?

I assume you are talking about maille.

It is usually a right angle seam. No matter how hard you try, it will look wrong. Don't worry, it isn't. The end links will be idlers and as such will be going through more or less than four rings each. This is normal.

It will look something like this when you are done. Drawn as if you were standing next to someone who had his hand raised above his head. the "seam" where the lines go from up and down to side to side should be in the armpit.

Go here and download The Mail Research Society Journal vol. 1. It contains a nice clear pic of a 90-degree join in a historical shirt, the A2 Wallace. 90-degree joins tend to alternate between the joining link going through three links and through four links.

Not to throw a monkey wrench in the works, but I was under the impression that the ARS still held copyright for the old Mail Research Society stuff, so this may not be a legal download.

No, this was done with Erik D. Schmid's permission -- he himself has let the people know they can download this PDF now.

Now if you want dead-tree editions of Vol. 1, he might have some available for just under $20, w/shipping. I don't know.

That's what the ARS has permisson to sell. I made an inquiry with the ARS and the whole copyright thing with Erik's publication is sort of up in the air between them, but the upshot is that downloading will draw no ire at this time.
