New Stonekeep Helm #8- Erik the Awful
New Stonekeep Helm #8- Erik the Awful
Hal sent me this pattern.
Riveted and welded.
14 gauge topper, 14 gauge everything, even nose.
1/4 inch and 3/8 inch barstock.
This one was fun!!
I need to consult with Hal before pricing it.

Don't know if it's got any historical basis but this one is definitly a cool looking helm.

I did a heavy deep penetration weld from the back of the small bars.
It actually went all the way around but it is difficult to tell because the main bar is 3/8. I went two settings higher than 3/8 when putting the 3/8 and 1/4 bars together, so i really melted them together well. I was afraid of the helm being dropped a lot in that area so i wanted to overdo it a little. thats why i went with the 3/8 bar coming down. I wanted a lot of strength in that area.

Oh on the eye thing, im not sure, will have to check next time im in the shipping bldg... The pattern called for about an inch and 3/4 eye slot, with a bar in the middle. The only changes I made was giving him a "broken nose" so you could see up and down a little better and you could pad it closer to the eye slot (if desired) without fear of your nose touching. Just gave a little more room for the nose....

Oh and Ive got a 3/8 inch bar "bridge" under the 14 gauge nose which is solidly welded to the top of the long 3/8 bar. this way if the bridge of the nose took a direct hit on only the bridge of the nose with a large weapon like a glave (would have to be a side angle hit), it will absorb into a 14 gauge piece with 3/8 bar backing and that 3/8 bar is welded to the outside of the helm, so i do not expect it to deform whatsoever... and the 14 gauge is creased on top of that, so i think that area is super strong and Im not worried about it now. I was originally.

That wouldn't be a problem.. Its actually a pain to make it this high...
