gorget design help

Post by Stoffel »

I threw away my gorget I fight in because I was tired of it. I hate the typical sca style gorgets, and it didnt match my armour at all. I've decided to make myself one out of maille, covering leather, so it just looks like a maille standard over a collar. Specifcally I'm trying to figure out how to have the maille neck opening wide enough to get over my head, yet still be able to close it easily tight around me neck.

Rather than putting it over your head, why not lace it or buckle it, like a collar?

Would that be better?

I have seen one of these in use. It worked very well and the owner (Baron Sir Alphonso d'Strada) was very happy with it.

What he did was add a mail collar to a pre-existing leather-and-steel gorget. He put a split in the mail for about 3" and centered that split right where the gorget came together in back. If you looked for the construction details, you could see the split, but it sure wasn't obvious. Did that make sense?

I finally figured something out after some enginering. Its insane how increadibly comfortable it is! When I wore the steel gorget I would always get it caught up on rolled edges and on the bottom edge of my sallet, but with this gorget, I'm worried about whiplash because I can move my head around so much! Image btw, I posted some pics of it in another thread I just made.
