WTB: lanthorn panels

Post by Ceddie »

I'm looking for the fake horn panels to make some lanterns like the ones discussed

Any help would be appreciated!

You can get REAL ones for pretty cheap from H.E. In fact I'll bet they're about the same price as fake ones.

Well heck. I just looked thru the site myself and couldn't find it. I know they still carry it though. Try emailing them and asking about it.

Close. I'm looking for just the pieces of horn (or fake horn) pannels so I can complete another lantern.

This vendor will make horn panes to order. They look like they might be costly....

Have you thought about making them yourself?

It is fairly simple. I think locating the horn would be the hard part.

Just take the horn and steam it (put in big pot of boiling water ABOVE the water on a rack and steam it until in is soft and plyable) Then cut it length wise until it can be layed out flat like a wierd triangle shape. Then smash between 2 large flat surfaces (2 pieces of plywood) and weigh it down and wait for it to dry. Once dry cut to fit and you are done.

Atleast that was how it was explained to me.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

It is one of those processes that is easy enough in concept but not in execution. The horn tends to have a memory and it also really wants to be very thoroughly steamed before it is willing to cooperate even a bit.

Having tried this process I would personally be inclined to pay someone who has spent the time and effort to develop skill at the process to do the work for me, rather than spend my time and effort trying to raise my skill to the point of producing a consistently satisfactory result.

2 cents from the peanut gallery, for what they're worth.
