The next in the series of Bede's World Saturday talks takes place this Saturday, 27
May, at 12 noon.
Richard Darrah will be speaking on "How the Anglo-Saxons worked wood", and will be
demonstrating timber working techniques with replica tools based on excavated
originals. Richard is a leading specialist on ancient woodworking techniques and
archaeological wood, and has been involved in a number of experimental reconstructions
- including the experimentally reconstructed timber buildings at Bede's World.
Admission charges apply; admission is free to members of the Friends of Bede's World.
For details and directions see www.bedesworld.co.uk
Also of interest to those quick off the mark (if you are not already planning to come)
is tonight's Jarrow Lecture, which takes place annually on the Friday nearest St Bede's
day in St Paul's Church. Professor Paul Harvey of Durham University will speak on
"Maps in the Age of Bede". The lecture begins at 7.30pm.
Over the rest of the Bank Holiday weekend at Bede's World (Sunday and Monday), medieval
musician Richard York will be demonstrating with an excellent and wide-ranging
collection of replica early musical instruments.
