Hey Roland! I need your Fencing Helm Pattern
As the title says, I need the pattern for your fencing helm.
Or anyone else who may have a pattern for a burgonet style fencing helm.

Arland! Good to hear from you! I'm a bit busy right now, re-doing the burgeonet pattern. I'm trying to make it with a comb, rather then just a crest ridge. A few of the details are going to change too.
My aluminum helmet got stolen while I was in Germany... Damn barracks.
I'll see what I can do about scanning in the works in progress.
What are you going to do for the top? Oh, and can you do the welding on it? Right now, the design is set up for a one-piece apperance, while it is actually med up of a two-piece skull, wrap, and visor. The cheek plates are seperate, as are the neck lames.
Anyway, drop me a line! Arithan@yahoo.com

Arland or Roland,
could either one of you tell me just how thinck was the helm? I remember seeing it at Celtic Sheep & Garter but not its dimensions. The reason that I am wondering about this is because I am working with several others to try to get Side-Sword approved in Society and Drachenwald Specificly.
thanks
Elias
PS Arland if you see him one of the newest Sojourners is going to be in your area soon: Korrigan Walace. Please make him welcome and give him a good rap shot from me.

Right now I don't have anything to weld with. I can probably make it out of a 1 piece top with enough hammering. I'm thinking either 18 steel for the top or if I can find the right type of aluminum I'll go with 14ga aluminum for the top. I can always sand/buff it thinner. I'm starting to collect tools so who knows what I'll end up with by next year.
I guess I really need to read the requirements on the SCA Fencing helms.

Elias,
My original black burgeonet was made from approx. 16 ga aluminum. It worked really well, and only needed the occasional dent pounded out. After three years of getting smacked with schlager blades, I think I only had to fix it two or three times. None of the dents were deep enough to hit my noggin, though.
The faceplate was 16 ga perf. steel. I highly recommend this. The original alum. face was too soft, and was just not up to task. The steel, however, never needed repair.
The latest burgeonet is made out of 16 ga steel, including the face. I thought about 18, but as I would be using it for waster practice, I decided the extra dent resistance would be well worth it.
What other info do you need? Oh, and what type of blade are you proposing for sidesword?

from what I understand the blade is to be a type of tappered schlager blade the lengths I don't know off the top of my head. though I am fairly sure that it is not to be over 44 inches overall length. As I get more info from the others that are being more diligent in their work than I am I'll let you know.

Hey Roland if I could get that pattern as well I would greatly appreciate it.I do have the means to weld the helm top together,so that is not a problem.
Thanks ahead of time,
WGraham

The first thing to do when asked to throw a celtic spear... is give it to a celt. Then you tell him to throw it. Why would a good landsknecht throw away a perfectly useful spear? We throw celts better anyway...
Wags, it'll be a bit before I finish the refinement of the pattern, but I'll post it here when it's finished.
The perf steel should work fine for small-sword then. I have a few reservations on using when epees are involved, though. One of the guys on post had talked to a fencing helmet company about getting mesh by the sheet. I remember the cost being reasonable, and I don't think it would be too hard to form. I can't recall the name of the company, but I recall it started with an "S" and was near Schweinfurt. I hope that helps a bit.
Any other input?

Here's what McMasterCarr carries. At those prices I'm sure you can find it cheaper elsewhere with a bit of looking.
