Man it's good to work in construction.
Well last friday I went down to syracuse and picked up 1300 pounds of 18ga cold rolled mild.
I need to cut a lot of it into 2.5" wide strips for coat of plates kits and lorica segmentata kits.
Anyway my brother's got a friend who works at sextons mechanical (a fairly big hvac contractor). He hadn't been able to get ahold of his friend yet but today there was a guy from Sextons in at the office (we're building a new office out in the shop for me and the draftsman). So I asked him what my chances of getting to use their shear would be. He said sure no problem. Just call and ask to talk to so and so and tell him who you are and where you work. So I called up asked for whatsis name and he said sure just stop by anytime. So now I've just gotta figure out when I can go and I'll spend some time cutting strips. It'll be WAY faster then the electric shear I've got and the cuts will be cleaner and be perfectly straight.
Man it's good to work in the commercial/industrial construction business.

Well I now have a crapload (technical term) of 2.5" x 4' strips of 18ga cold rolled mild. I'm guessing about 800 pounds worth. Took a whole hour to cut em and unload the pieces from the truck and load the strips back in again.

The kits will be all the steel plates cut, shaped, deburred, corners rounded, edges rolled unpolished and with all the holes punched. They won't include the leather or the hooks and hinges. Price will likely be somewhere between $65-75

Yes Hal that is very funny. I've not only got the 18ga stuff either I've also got around 800 13ga shield boss blanks that were free (thanks to where I work) pre-cut and everything and I can get more of those any time I want. I think I'm gonna need a warehouse soon. :0
Anyway I don't do stainless steel. Plus I've got this huge heap of mild steel that needs to be turned into stock before I buy more steel anyway. I have sorta been playing with the idea of making the CoP kits in aluminum in the future though. And aluminum and stainless bosses. That'll be a while from now though.

Well, I HAVE a mild segmantata. What's so funny about asking about stainless? The fact that he has lots of mild now does not preclude ALSO having some stainless.
Matt, how are the plates in your kit set up? All one width, or a complete set (chest plates, etc)?

No Hal the big ones are only 8" diameter.
Actually I guess it's more ironic then funny (if I'm using the word ironic properly that is)
Owen: Are you talking about the lorica kits?
There will be the horizontal girdle bands 2 different lengths so the overlap works right all the same width. The upper chest plates with rolled edges where they're supposed to be. Plus all the shoulder pieces appropriate widths. Haven't decided yet if I'm going to do the corbridge or the newstead version. They'll be up to roman re-inactor standards if they are put together with all the appropriate fittings.
Like I said though. No stainless from me.
