Ok, I deserve the shield boss and axe head because I don't have either. As I am putting together my kit, I am in the process of deciding what direction to go. A spear seems the most economical, but I don't really fancy myself as a spear fighter. As a result that brings me to the alternates: swords and axes. However, that means I need something to hide behind. As I stated earlier, I have neither weapon nor shield with which to enter combat. At the present rate of cash flow and maille manufacture, I will be lucky to begin training next summer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I also feel that someone with a damaged shield boss has a slight advantage over me in that they already have a shield. That indicates they have the resources to repair the one they have, or acquire a new one. I do not, as I have a child due in March.
I do not have a picture to post, as I do not yet have a kit to photograph. I can show you a picture of me in a western tuxedo and cowboy hat that I HAD to wear in a friends wedding (I don't need to be made fun of, I felt stupid enough), but that wouldn't really support my point.
221 words. I am either well within, or a little over. I can edit if you would like.
Thank you for your consideration.

Godin: You qualify. Remember I said a picture of you looking forlorn without a shield may be entered if you don't have one.
Wether it'll help or not will be up to the judges but it couldn't hurt.
Contest ends november 30 at 11:59 pm. Like I said further up.

I have an early period persona, I have the helm, the armour is almost finished, I have a dished round shield. But my only shield boss is SPUN!! It has a hole in the center! When I put it on the shield it looks like I am carrying a giant breast! Oh whoa is me! I'll be a laughing stock. A hammered boss will solve these problems. Help me please!!

Actually Glen you're quite welcome to contribute to this contest. It was just that since there were no entries for the boss contest I figured you'd have a better response as a seperate contest.
Course I don't mind having a chance to win an axe head from you either.
Either way it's totally up to you. I'm happy either way. If you have a seperate contest I'm happy that I have a chance to enter. If you decide to stay with this one then I'm happy to be associated with you.

Re: Blackening with linseedoil:
It's done just as any oli blackening, but it maybe give an more 'period' result.
The shieldboss was blackend with boiled linseedoil on an ordinary charcoalgrill, just oil the piece lightly with an brush (not to much so that it gets 'runny') and place it above the heat and watch it turn darker. Ash and soot from the charcoal may get stuck in the oil so the result isn't that smooth.
To avoid this you can blacken in your oven, but don't do this if your better half is present because it smells like... well, burnt oil, and there is an rather thick smoke too... Open the windows etc...
After 15-30 min on full heat the surface has turned to a nice matte black/gray. If you apply another coat when the piece has cooled down abit and put it back into the oven for 15 more minutes, you get an glossy black/brown surface which could almost be mistaken för paint.
Both these surface are very resilent and gives a good rustprotection.
On the surface the piece is resting the result isn't that good, but you can apply some more oil and touch it up with a torch, but you will get the glossy surface on that part.

Raymund,
Why the elaborate treatment of the shield boss to blacken it, and the bolts are left in their hardware-store galvanized glory? Just curious...

Tuomas -- Doesn't look like your shield has a boss... I demand he be removed from the contest!
Just kidding
My shield doesn't have a boss either... It being a peice of cardboard that says "Wil work for armer" that I hold up at events while sitting on the busiest pathway I can find... I'll try to get a pic (it won't be of me at an event, or even with garb, because I'm still using loaner garb).

Oh, woe is me, for I have the crappiest shield boss (and shield) around! It is a tin shield with the boss made out of a gold spraypainted thingie that you would normally use to attach gutters to your house with. It's not even round! My poor boss cannot even withstand my little sister hitting it with her "baby sister kelly" barbie dolls. *whimper* Please, you trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obediant, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverant judges, take pity on this poor lowly sycophant, and help him to recieve a new shield boss of which he can construct a far mightier shield to accompany. (Plus I could use the axe head to fix that BIG GAPING BADLY PATCHED HOLE in my wall right next to the shield).

Okey dokey, I'll give this one a shot, for the sake of arguements...
I have a shield, it is a puny shield, it is 3/8 plywood covered with duct tape because i didn't have any silver paint lying around and i'm a big fan of The Red Green Show... While I don't fight heavy, not even light, being in a boffer group, I aspire to bigger and better things. Having a shield Boss at my disposal, I would create one mother of a kick butt shield and would thus generate so much awe and envy within my group that before long our boffers would be traded for rattan and would thus generate a cornucopia of business all around as I would advertise whence said shield boos originated... Pictures to come of my in puny barb with puniest shield...
I don't know if this can even be considered as an entry but if anything my long winded entry with serious lack of ponctuation should count for something.

Well, I'll go with a text entry.
Here goes:
I currently have no kit, no shield, and no weapon. I work full time and attend college full time. I have to work full time so that I can pay my child support and help put my son's mother through college even though we are not together anymore. I have to go to school full time because it is a requirement of my academic scholarship. I have been doing this now for 5 semesters. I am saving what little money I can so that I can visit my son during the holidays. I am also saving so that I might move to the east coast after graduation to be closer to my 2 year old son so that he will know his father. I have already traded something of value to me so that I may get the basics of a kit together. I do not expect to have much in the way of extra money any time soon. I do plan on fighting with a center grip round shield so a shield boss would be very much appreciated.
You can see me penniless and prospectless here. Okay, actually these were taken a few years ago at a Dickens themed event in which I was one of Fagin's thieves. But they pretty much present the state of my kit accurately.
End.
Robert

why do I want a shield boss? I don't have any pics of the ugliest, cause I don't have one. I want a shield boss because being new to the SCA, I am trying to put together all the things I need to heavy fight, and using one piece of metal would be nice considering all plastic armor. I am in the military, going to school, and my wife says that If I spend one more #@$%$ dime she'll rip my arm off and beat me with it, so you see I need the shield boss to complete the shield so I can defend myself. (Next I try to win the axe and go for the counter-attack)

Ave!
Well since not many people have ugly shield bosses and have reverted to begging and pleading about ugly armour in hopes of winning the contest, I figured I might as well join in( lord only knows I could use one also).
Here's the situation...
1) ugly blue plastic
2) ugly green helm (gotta be seen)
3) making new roman kit and need shield boss
4) free is GREAT!
I can't post pictures yet so if there is one of the judges I can send my beautiful portrait to just let me know. Heh, heh, heh, you gotta see this one.
Let me repeat..I am making a new kit.
Ciao!
