Well my shield is'nt as ugly as above but it is a Center boss which is a requirement.
As you can see by the Fuzzy Elmo chair my shield is propped on I have other things that my cashflow must support other than my Armor fix...so that set of Maximillian plate will have to wait until the little one is out of college or I win the lottery. A new shield boss would go great on a new shield and with the new lamellar harness I am building, with plates purchased off this very board.
Yes the shield is made of Kydex...
(bad bad bad)
and the boss is not spun but it is very heavy.

Is this good enough for an entry?

THIS IS NOT AN ENTRY FOR THE CONTEST

I am not entering this because I really don't need a shieldboss Image
but I just had to share what came walking in the front door earlier today.

This thing is amazing!

For a start whoever made it used too thin a steel. They used too big a collar....And most remarkably they seem to have managed to stuff up the simplest of concepts to do with shield bosses.....How to attach the bloody thing.

Rather then having four odd holes drilled in it, this one has nuts badly tack-welded to the inside surface so that bolts coming through from the back of the sheild must be cut exactly to length.

The bowl is too small for a fighter's hand to fit properly (let alone a half-gaunt)

Anyway, in comes this fighter saying he has got a bit of a dent and can he borrow my dishing stump.
I can see that the "dent" has caused a crack that will break through in one blow and tell him about it. He says he wants to try anyway and I tell him to go ahead.

Sure enough (it took two hits) and the massive cracks start appearing everywhere (this thing has been over stressed and over stretched for probably years). He asks if he can borrow my arc welder. I look at teh metal and tell him it will not do any good. That I couldn't fix that even with a TIG because the metal has actually deteriorated and is going powdery (like cast iron with rot). He says he would like to try anyway and I say go ahead.
He cranks the amps on the welder all the way up and creates this impressive item of modern art....

the scariest thing is that he thought it might be okay for a while longer in this condition.
I told him that he could make a new one right here in less then ten minutes and that it would servve him better.
I handed him one of my pre-cut disks and showed him what to do...and while he was making noises with hammers I took these pics....

lol... that is hilarious, Sasha... unfortunately, I can see myself using such a thing... I've fixed bigger cracks than that with an acetalyn(sp?) welder... First time ever using one, and I fixed a 1"x2" hole in a muffler, after my auto shop teacher told me it was impossible...
I could fill that hole... he should've started at the start of the crack, and he coulda gotten it fine...

...and he should have preped the surface and he shouldn't have cranked it to 140amps with a 2mm rod still in the handpeice....
Oh well. He is happier with what he has now.

Actually, having welded really stupidly impossible stuff over the years I would probably have thrown this one in. The steel had literallly gone "talcum powderish" around the cracks. By the time he cut that out it would have been "bloody huge gaps" instead of cracking.

Um, Titus doesn't have a shield boss on his shield. Does that still count? Interesting paint job on the helmet though.

Ok well it's time for the judging. No more entries will be accepted.

And just to be a jerk and drive some people to my new forums Judges can post their votes on my new "Order Information" forum. Go to my site and click the visit my forums link.

I think it'll be a good idea to give a 1-10 rating for the entries. If you miss someone that'll mean you rate them a 0 I'll add everything up and we'll see who wins.

Hopefully we can have the judging end December 10.

Darn ... and I had worked up such s good sob story. I forgot what date it was. Image

Ooh, a shield boss and an axe, and they're within my price range, free! Since I have no ugly shield boss yet, or shield Image *sniffles*, I'm counting on sob story points. So here goes ...

A little background ... I'm a sophmore college student going to NDSU in Fargo ND, majoring in Biotechnology. I'm taking 18 credits this semester and 20 last (20 is the maximum they allow) and I work at a dining center on campus about 12hr a week so I can afford things like gas to drive home once in a while (4hr drive away) and plane tickets to NY so I can spend x-mas with my girlfriend.
I'm a member of the local SCA group, the Shire of Korsvag, and of the NDSU Medieval Society. I've been working hard for the last year to be able to compile a kit of armor so I can fight. Since I don't have money to buy my armor with, I work with members of the local groups so I can make my own. I was able to complete a CoP and a ratan sword last year, and I hoped to be able to get a helmet made this year.
If I was able to win a shield boss and an axe head it would put me one more wonderful step closer to being able to fight.

If you'd pick me for the winner I'd greatly appreciate it, and put those beatiful pieces to good use.

Glen
