Getting the blackness off of metal

Post by Sir Oswald »

I am finishing up my first helm, but it has a layer of blackness that I hate. I have been sanding it off, but it takes a long time to sand a little off. Is there any other way to get this black stuff off? Thanks.

If you're talking about the mill scale on hot rolled steel then vinergar works pretty well.

I've also used those scruffy disks you can get for paint stripping to clean it off.

Sasha has written a step by step procedure for getting rid of the black scale, which he kindly allowed me to put up on my site. Have a look here
