Stonekeep: New stuff for the Breastplate Section

Post by Stonekeep »

Stonekeep: Added some new stuff yesterday.

A while back I was selling a few breastplates and plackart kits based on Andre's since he wasnt selling anything in steel. When he started making mild steel, I dropped all of that until I had time to research my own style.
Just added a few things yesterday to that section, and hopefully will be able to add more as i work on some of my A&S stuff for competition. (which may lead to a whole new line for us, since Im making handmade buckles etc., and trying to do exact copies of pieces in our reference books)

oooo that stuff looks nice.

I still need to get you measurements to don't I. I'll see If I can get that done this week.

On the complete one you can add tassets to it. Do you have pictures of those?

may soon if the guy orders them... We didnt know what Id charge until I actually made one. Took me about 6 hours plus materials. (should get faster on next ones.. at least i hope so since I didnt price it for 6 hours..lol)

I made this one to this guy's custom measurements, then told him what I could sell it for. he was under no obligation but hes really excited about getting it next payday. (this payday he got full legs with all the bells and whistles, gorget, and spaulders with all available options, and a helm) So we tapped him out on this weeks paycheck..lolol

These are gonna be made exclusively to a customer's measurements (unless my wholesale buyers wanna takes some to events or something), so I wont have any instock. This guy will probably buy the tassets giving me a chance to take a pic. Also Im hoping that when he gets it he will dress up in garb (or in all the other armor he bought from us this week) and take a pic so i will have one on the guy it was meant to fit.
Just to get a pic i put it on a guy too short but with close to the same girth.
I did a lot of research on these and have a few different looks i want to add later. I pretty much have to find a guy like this that will send measurements and agree to buy it (but not under obligation) before I can explore some different things. I just need 3 simple measurements to make these unlike a typical breastplate. I think the back horizontal straps may be made of 1 inch material instead of 3/4 next time, but this leather is super tough so im not concerned. Im thinking more ease of buckling.

If you have the Osprey books look at plate G in German Medieval Armies 1300-1500 and you will see three versions I fully intend to make. I also intend to make the elbows on the mounted knight. ( I want to make that entire suit for my A&S project and present it in pieces throughout the year, then prsent it on stand at next years Kingdom A&S competition) Then its going next to my fireplace, lol

If you look on page 24 of English Medieval Knight 1400-1500, I also want to offer that exact product shown there, which is a plackart and half back with front and rear gothic faulds. I think that would make and excellent SCA usable product. You can also see a slightly different version on page 20 (north Italian armor cir 1450) Which just making the plackart with back would also work well for SCA use.

Unfortunately I don't have either of those books. Any chance you can scan in the pictures?

There we go...

I figure i will make them with plackart and small sca-style kidney plates, then also with that item offer tassets as an option. With 3-4 plackart options.

Then later I want to offer an item exactly like the second picture with plackart and faulds. (with 3-4 plackart options)

Then the third option will be the full breastplate and backplate with faulds I have on the site already.

That should round out and give me a decent selection in my breastplate section.

Im talking to zweihammer about having him laser cut gauntlets for me in 3 sizes probably, then just sell me the cut out parts for us to assemble here. Once I get that done, I will have finally become a onestop shop.

I'd LOVE one, but I need the ransom for the legs first....

A tabard can always cover a mismatched 14th centuy breastplate in a 15th century harness, but the legs.....

Still, keep that thought, I am dying for a matching late 15th century set......

Donno till i get finished. I usually do these things, watch my time and materials cost then offer a price.... never had anyone not want it after hearing the prices. I always do the first one of a new item in mild steel..
Then I set the price and use the pics to show off the new item on the website. For stainless you just have to adjust the materials cost by 7 times since thats what its currently running.

Main thing is i wanna kinda have someone in mind when I make one of these because theres no sense having a custom item instock.

I am interested in the second picture of the placard and faulds, if I send my measurements could I get a rough estimation of price for stainless.

Well... no... BUT I wont require you to buy it if it turns out more than you were hoping....

Reason is I dont have a clue till I make it and check the time. I usually do basically a timecard while Im working on a new item.

Now one of our wholesale customers put in a medium sized order today, so this would actually knock me back about a week on trying to work on this extra project. we have been really slow for the past two weeks, although I know that soon all hell will break loose. lol
Id like to get this added to our site though, so Id work after hours on it. 8am-6pm is paid for armor from clients. After 6p and weekends Im not at events, I make new things and "play"

I would figure going in that this would be roughly twice the work required to make the plackart kits I already put online. with steel, labor is what you are buying. with stainless its 50/50.
