Going straight off of memory, so I might be wrong. But I seem to remember that's a member of the Chivalry who has epilepsy - any blow to the head, and he has a seizure. So he had that cage built to fight in, and if memory serves, takes any blow to it as good to the head. I think he's from West? Caid?

Is that SCA? The sticks don't have any tape and the gaps in the bars are way more than 1"

Ha ha! When I first looked at it I thought it was a shot of some dude through a basket hilt.

I've seen it, or another remarkably like it. I recall an explanation to the effect that the person could not safely receive impact to the head, although I do not recall why. I also recall that the person acknowledged blows to the cage as good.

It is SCA (or at least the similar one I saw). There's mesh in addition to the heavy bars. As to the lack of tape on weapons in the picture, how many people duct tape their hafts ? I don't see the business end of any weapons in that picture...

Well, i asked around and some one seems to recall that picture as an old piece that wa worn in the tuchux. they have the armour standard in their own group, that if you feel safe enough, then its fine.

I was thinking a ball turret from a B-17.

That is Sir Robear du Bois. He is epileptic, so didn't want to get hit in the head. He later replaced the birdcage (yes, that's what he called it) with a pretty nice great bascinet that also rested on the shoulders.
