We need another forum?

Post by Murdock »

I'm lurking Legio for a while

We need a PT/ work out hints forum.

I have a seriously messed up right arm, from shoulder on down. I know alot of yall have SCA specific training tips that could help busted up ole squiers like me.

Thoughts? Opinions? Dirty lymerics?

I told you to call here, but you won't do it. My arm went from useless and in pain to useful and in less intense pain. It's your own damn fault that you don't find out how I made my arm able to fight again.

im actually in the process of making a web site (off my server) dedicated to shoulder issues and ways to prevent problems. i have some animated gifs that show exercises to strengthen the abductor and adductor muscles as well as how to generally make the rotator cuff as strong as possible. ive learned so much from my new doctor and im actually pretty much pain free for the first time in 8 years and especially since my surgery 3+ years ago. its awesome.

in fact, i just got back from the gym for the first time in 5 years or so and was actually able to swim a few (very few) laps. the flexibility isnt quite there yet but im working on that and i hope to be able to at least fight competetively again by pennsic. the only problem im having now is a radial fracture i got a few weeks ago from punching a guy in the face. tis right above my elbow in the humerus and its a little uncomfortable when sca fighting. but my shoulders feel great.

ill have it webbed soon and for the exercises i dont have animated gifs for ill probably just run some video streams. i think its very hard to describe good technique but very easy to show it. im hoping that other people with other injuries and preventative methods will contribute to it (knee, elbow, back. etc). if so then ill probably also have a pdf of each body group available and ill move it to my fighterpractice.com domain.

Oh most puissant and wise Sir Vitus, me too please.

Duke Logan,

I think I have resolved my shoulder issue but my sword arm elbow is a mess. Any help is appreciated.

Yes it did, I've just been kind of at a loss as to how to strengthen the area around the elbow joint so that it doesn't hurt for three days after I fight sword and sheild. It may be that the last time I tried sword and board was with a big Ansteorran type strapped heater and that just throws my body mechanics all out of whack. Can't move my hips right, which means I wind up trying to power the shot with just arm strength. I've acquired a smaller centergrip heater and boss (thanks to Ceddie) which I think will suit my fighting style better.

However, if you've got more of those way cool exercises that focus a bit more on strengthening the elbow, I'd be all over that. :D

you dont need to move your hips to throw powerful blows. you can, of course, do so. but in no way is it required. you need to throw blows that dont cause you discomfort. all of them can be thrown with power. anyone that tells you otherwise is, simply, wrong.

After four elbow surgeries (two on each arm), I'm still not 100%, and my surgeons think they've done all they can. So my only alternative (aside from hanging up the sword, of course - and THAT'S no fun...) is to find a style of fighting that doesn't cause me pain. Going from a heavy wire basket to a lighter aluminum one helps. And I got one of those nifty Mandrake hilts, but I need to find some good gloves for my clamshells before I can use them.

This sport is hard on the body, no question. You just gotta be smart about it, and learn to listen to what the old joints are telling you.
