gulf Wars helmet tape colors?

Post by InsaneIrish »

Going off the stickers on helmets thread. Anyone know what colors the sides are for Gulf Wars? If I could find out before hand, I could make a torse in each color to put on my helm to keep from having that damned sticker on there.

Anybody?

usually red and blue. But the marshals aren't likely to allow you to put a torse on in place of the tape.

THAT will be an arguement I will fight once there. I have before and I will again. If I have an appriately colored torse that is MUCH more visibly in a 360degree arc than any square of tape, then the marshallete will be hard pressed to deny me.

BTW: You now have the EM for Ansteorra and Trimaris chiming in that we are cool with the idea.

Trimaris will be blue on silver.
Ansteorria will be Black on gold.

the sides will be marked by manufactured stickers.

I still say, make a torse!

just avoid the red

I see my clever plan of "say they won't do it so they'll do it just because you said they won't" is working.

Hey -- Meridies is allied with Ansteorra, and as it happens, I already have a black-on-gold torse! Maybe I'll give it a try too.

Have you calibrated with torses on your helm?

Calibrated? No, but what I am thinking about doing is not a full Mantle, only the roped circle around the brow. I don't think it will cause an issue with calibration.

You might be suprised, it can make the whole helmet sound 'dead'. not to mention adding padding tothe outside of the sweet spot at the temple.
It just takes getting use to and knowing that it is there.

OH, believe me I Plan on field testing it before battle so I get a feel of it. Also I am not looking at making a super thick "pillowy" torse.

I may be out of line, but..

Stickers are required as part of the "yeah I was inspected" phase, but colored tape is not required **i don't think**. It's done to help each other identify who is who in the crux of battle, since typically we haven't been on war campaign with each other for the last 5 years and don't necessarily know who are brothers are. (figuratively speaking of course).

I've never seen anywhere that says we are REQUIRED to put the colored tape on our helms, our generals just want us to so we don't have incidents of friendly fire.

If you have a torse that stays put, and I had a dog in this "fight", I would happily accept that in lieu of tape - because realistically, the tape is still hard to queue in on when you are double-timing through a shield wall, swinging in axe while avoiding a barrage of spears and poles.

just sayin'....

(edit) this is my opinion and my understanding and as such is probably wrong. :-)

ok, I JUST finishecd them up last night. After I figured it out, they were not that hard. I ended up going with the "puffy" ones because they were actually easier to do than the smaller braided ones.

Is that just tubes of material stuffed with batting twisted around each other?
How do you keep it in place? Carpet tape?

If you wound it tight, and tied it off at the back, shouldn't it stay on its own? And as for it dulling blows, I think its just another point in the "Medieval folk were 10000% smarter than we give them credit for column."

yep

5" wide strips of fabric, however long you need them ( made mine 50" and cut them down later), folded over and sewn into tubes. Then turned inside out to hide the stitching.

I used a roll of quilt batting from the fabric store. I cut it into 5" wide strips folded the strips over the end of a yard stick and stuffed the batting into the tube loosely.

after filling the tubes loosely, I sewed 2 of the ends together. Not end to end, but in a "V" shape. On the yellow and black torse I left plenty of "tail" on each end so that I would have hangy bits. Then I simply twisted them together.

I fitted the twisted tube around the helmet and marked where they joined in the back. Then I sewed the other end shut and pulled the excess batting out of the tube. (NOTE: I recommend using wide tweezers to hold the batting and pulling the tube fabric back, then cutting off teh batting at the sewed edge. That way you keep your tube intact) I then tied the joint together 1" smaller than the mark, with synthetic sinew and used a leather punch needle to "sew" the joined ends together, making a "knot" at the back of the helm.

I then tacked the twists to each other at about 4" intervals around the tube. That way it would not come unwound easily.

Right now the torses are only sitting on the helm. The way the helmet is shaped helps keep them on. However I plan on adding sometype of "friction" tape to the inside of the torses to help keep them in place. But, you may not need it, depending on the type of helm you have.

Well back from Gulf Wars.

The torse worked perfectly. I put 2 small pieces of ductape on sticky side out, on the inside of the torse and then put it on the helm. It never came off, even when I accidently dropped it walking back to camp.

I DID have the lady at the inspection point try and put the sticker on my helm. But, after politely telling her I made this torse so I didn't have to have a stupid sticker on my helm AND that I had the OK from the Trimaris and Ansteorran KEM she said OK. I even got her to put the inspection sticker on my gauntlet cuff instead of my helm to.

All and all I am EXTREAMLY pleased with how it looks, works, and complememts my rig.

Now to make one in my kingdom's colors and one in my personal colors. :D
