Leather thickness for shoes

I want to make some simple turnshoes for fighting. I don't care how pretty they look since I intend to wear sabatons over them. I do want them to be tough, functional, historically accurate, and as comfortable as reasonably possible.

I already have a side of veg tanned leather that is about 9-10 oz. Is this going to be too thick use to make shoes? I thought I might try to use what I have since it is already paid for, but if it is not going to work at all there is no sense in starting. If I have to buy another side of leather, it will cost about what a pair of shoes would cost anyway and they would probably fit better. :roll:

Way to thick for uppers; I use 3/4oz and they last a long time. Typically the sole wears through before there is damage to the upper.

I believe you can buy about enough leather for uppers for about $25.
